NO. 5 SAINTS SETTLE FOR FRUSTRATING TIE AGAINST THE FALCONS

River Falls scores two goals in final 47 seconds to get the tie

DULUTH, Minn. – The 13th-ranked University of Wisconsin-River Falls erased a two-goal deficit in the final 47 seconds to tie the fifth-ranked St. Scholastica hockey team 5-5 tonight at Mars Lakeview Arena.

The tie gives the Saints an 11-3-3 overall record and a 5-2-3 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) record. The Falcons now have an overall record of 10-5-2 and are 4-4-2 in the conference.

Unlike last night, the Saints got off to a good start as former Falcon #Riley Riddell# (Jr.-Wawota, Sask.) gave CSS a 1-0 lead halfway through the first period with his sixth goal of the season. #Brett Corcoran# (Fr.-Parksville, B.C.) and #Jordan Chong# (Sr.-North Vancouver, B.C.) had the assists. With 34 seconds left in the opening period, Jordan Chong (North Vancouver, British Columbia/Dryden (SIJHL)) scored his team-best 10th goal on the year to make it 2-0 at the first intermission. #Jeremy Dawes# (So.-Winnipeg, Man.) and #Aaron Spotts# (Sr.-Spokane, Wash.) had the assists.

Five minutes into the second period Jeremy Dawes (Winnipeg, Manitoba/College Jeanne Suave (Portage-MJHL) ) made it 3-0 with his eighth tally of the season. Spotts and #Colin Trachsel# (Fr.-St. Louis, Mo.) assisted on the goal.

The contest got exciting after that as there would be four goals scored in a span of 1:41 seconds. Jamie Ruff put the Falcons on the scoreboard with a goal at the 13:25-mark. River Falls then cut the lead to 3-2 with an Andrew Harrison goal 57 seconds later.

The Saints responded 14 seconds after that when #Austin Brown# (So.-Lathrup Village, Mich.) hit a slap shot into the net to make it 4-2. Aaron Spotts (Spokane, Wash./Cowichan Valley (BCHL)) had his third assist of the night on the goal. The Falcons cut the lead back to one 30 seconds later on a Jason Yuel goal to make it 4-3 at the second intermission.

CSS's #Jordan Baird# (Sr.-Port McNeill, B.C.) made it 5-3 with his sixth goal of the season 4:34 seconds into the third period. #Carter Davis# (So.-Moose Jaw, Sask.) had the assist. That score held up until the final minute of regulation.

The Saints, whom were called for just one penalty all night through the first 58 minutes, were called for hooking with 1:37 to go. The Falcons then called a timeout and pulled their goaltender to make it 6-on-4. With 59 seconds left the Saints would be called for another penalty to make it 6-on-3. River Falls took advantage as Josh Calleja scored two goals, one with 47 seconds left and the second with 22 seconds left to send the game into overtime tied 5-5.

Neither team could break the tie in the five-minute overtime session so the contest ended in a 5-5 tie.

The Saints out-shot the Falcons for the second straight night 37-30. #Brennan Poderzay# (So.-Tower, Minn.) stopped 25 shots for CSS and has a record of 6-2-1. Bo Storozuk had 32 saves for River Falls.

The Saints will be on the road next weekend for a series against the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday night. The action can be heard live on ESPN Radio 560-WEBC.
