DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's soccer team earned a 1-0 victory over the Bethany Lutheran College Vikings in its Homecoming game Saturday afternoon.
The defensive showdown saw the Saints outshoot the Vikings 19-9, but Vikings goalkeeper Cameron Koopman stopped 11 while keeping the Saints off the board through the entire first half.
St. Scholastica finally broke the scoreless tie when #Brandon Stemwedel#
(So.-Grand Rapids, Minn.) netted an unassisted score when the ball bounced off the hands of the diving goalkeeper into the post and back out to Stemwedel, who booted the ball just inside the near post out of the keeper's reach.
The lone goal was all the Saints would need as goalkeeper #Sam Reed#
(So.-Eastbourne,England) earned his second shutout in as many days, making four saves.
With the victory, CSS remains undefeated, now 7-0-1 on the season, including a perfect 5-0-0 record in the UMAC, while Bethany Lutheran falls to 4-6-0 (3-2-0 UMAC) in 2009.
The Saints step out of conference play on Wednesday when they will host Hamline University on Saints Field. The kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
