NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Scholastica women's tennis team dropped another close match to tough region opponent this afternoon with a 5-4 loss in Northfield, Minn.
The loss ends the Saints' six-match winning streak as they fall to a record of 15-8 overall. The Norse improve to 26-8 overall and are ranked 11th in the Central Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
In doubles, Luther took the two of the three matches. CSS's No. 3 team of #Katie Motley# (
Jr.-Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert) and #Kelly Ross# (
Jr.-Buffalo, Minn.) won by a score of 8-5. The No. 1 team of #Ploy Suthijindawong# (
Fr.-Bangkok, Thailand/Duluth Central) and #Callee Conda# (
So.-Hibbing, Minn.) lost in a close match 9-8 (7-5).
In singles, Ploy improved to 16-1 this season by blanking her opponent at the No. 1 spot 6-0, 6-0. The Norse took the next two flights in straight sets. At No. 4,
Callee Conda (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS (UW-Green Bay)) pulled out a third-set super tiebreak victory, 7-5, 5-7, (10-4). Then probably the best match of the day was at the No. 5 spot as #Angela Shields# (
Jr.-Pengilly, Minn./Greenway) rallied to win in a super tiebreak, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), (13-11). Shields has won eight straight matches. However, Luther won at the No. 6 spot to give them the fifth and deciding win in the match.
The Saints will play at North Central University on Thursday in the Twin Cities. That dual meet is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
