ORLANDO, Fla. – The St. Scholastica women's tennis team defeated both St. Ambrose University (Iowa) and St. Mary's College (Ind.) today down in Orlando, Fla.
In the first match against St. Ambrose the Saints won by a score of 5-4. #Callee Conda# (
So.-Hibbing, Minn.) at No. 1 singles won by scores of 6-2, 6-1. #Danni Sonnenfeld# (
So.-Harris, Minn./North Branch) at No. 2 singles was also victorious by scores of 6-1, 6-3. CSS then lost a couple of three-set matches at No. 3 and No. 5 singles before winning at No. 6 as #Liz Coyne# (
Fr.-St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park) was victorious in her first collegiate match 6-1, 6-2.
In doubles action, the No. 1 team of #Paula Beckermann# (
Jr.-Spicer, Minn./New London-Spicer) and #Katie Motley# (
Jr.-Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert) won by a score of 8-3. The No. 2 team of #Kelly Ross# (
Jr.-Buffalo, Minn.) and #Natalie Urick# (
Jr.-Virginia, Minn.) also won by a score of 8-2. St. Scholastica improves to 2-1 all-time against St. Ambrose.
In the second match, the Saints defeated St. Mary's College 7-2. CSS swept all three doubles matches. At No.1 it was #Ploy Suthijindawong# (
Fr.-Bangkok, Thailand/Duluth Central) and
Callee Conda (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS (UW-Green Bay)) winning by a score of 8-2. The No. 2 team of
Katie Motley (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) and
Paula Beckermann (Spicer, Minn./New London-Spicer HS) won 8-4.
Kelly Ross (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) and
Natalie Urick (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) at No. 3 doubles won a close match 9-7.
In singles action,
Ploy Suthijindawong (Bangkok, Thailand/Duluth Central HS) won at No. 1 by scores of 6-0, 6-1.
Katie Motley (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) won at No. 3 singles 6-2, 6-0.
Callee Conda (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS (UW-Green Bay)) was also victorious at No. 4 singles 6-3, 6-2. The final win was by
Danni Sonnenfeld (Harris, Minn./North Branch HS) at No. 6 singles in a tight three-set match 6-1, 3-6, (10-8). CSS avenges a 7-2 loss to St. Mary's last season.
With the two victories today the Saints improve to 5-2 overall and 2-1 on their Spring Trip. They will be in action again tomorrow morning when they face Bryn Mawr (Pa.) at 8 a.m.
