SUPERIOR, Wis. – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team is now .500 on the season after winning its third straight game this evening, defeating the University of Wisconsin-Superior 82-71 at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.
The Saints are 5-5 on the year, while the Yellowjackets fall to 4-5 overall. The Saints get revenge on the Yellowjackets, who defeated CSS earlier this season at the Reif by seven. CSS has won back-to-back games against the Yellowjackets in Superior.
After Superior scored the first points of the game, the Saints went on a 13-0 run triggered by back-to-back 3-pointers by #Kirsten Haukom# (
Sr.-Marshall, Minn.). CSS led by 15 halfway through the first 20 minutes and had a 41-33 lead at the halftime.
The Saints shot 56-percent in the first half and was 9-for-10 from the free throw line. The Yellowjackets shot 41-percent in the first half and made five, 3-pointers. The Saints out-scored the Yellowjackets 14-8 in the paint.
Superior would get within five a little over three minutes into the second half, but the Saints responded with a 19-3 run to extend its advantage to 67-46 with 10 minutes to go. CSS led by 24 with 4:27 to go and would cruise to an 81-72 victory.
The Saints finished at 57-percent for the game, while holding the Yellowjackets to 37-percent. Superior out-rebounded the Saints 40-35 and 20 offensive rebounds, which led to 25 second-chance points.
Kirsten Haukom (Marshall, Minn./Marshall HS) led the way for CSS with a game-high 20 points, 18 of which coming in the first half. Haukom also had a team-high eight rebounds. #Laura Amys# (

So.-Minong, Wis./Northwood) scored 13 points off the bench. Connie Urmanski had 14 points to lead Superior.
The Saints will have off until after Christmas when it travels to Sewanee, Tenn. to face Sewanee University (University of the South) on Wednesday, December 30th. The tip-off for that game is scheduled for noon.
