MORRIS, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's soccer team had another epic match with the University of Minnesota-Morris this afternoon, defeating the Cougars in penalty kicks to capture the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Men's Soccer Tournament Championship.

Both teams used 10 shooters before a winner was decided. There are just five shooters for each team to begin a shootout. If it is still tied after that then it goes to sudden death.

Neither team could muster a shot past the opposing goalkeeper in the first 110 minutes. Morris held the advantage in shots 14-12, but the tournament championship would be decided by penalty kicks.

The Saints entered the contest struggling to make a penalty kick this season as they were 3-for-9 on the season.

#Josh Odukomaya# (Fr.-White City, Sask./Luther College HS) took the first shot for CSS and made it. The Cougars also made their attempt to make it 1-1. CSS missed their second attempt, but Morris' was successful to make it 2-1.

Both teams scored on the third round of kicks as #Greg Doornink# (Jr.-Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) was the shooter for the Saints. #Toby Peter# (Jr.-Spalt, Germany/J.S. Bach) made his attempt in the fourth round, but Morris was not successful and it was tied 3-3 after four rounds.

#Jermaine Dacres# (Jr.-Nottingham, England/Haywood Comprehensive) made his attempt in round number five and so did the Cougars, which meant the shootout went into sudden death. If one team made it and the other did not the match was over.

#Andrew Ndekwe# (Jr.-Minneapolis, Minn./South) stepped up and made his for the Saints in the sixth round and Morris matched it. The Saints then missed their attempt in the seventh round, but so did the Cougars and the shootout continued.

#Cody Sveiven# (Jr.-Coon Rapids, Minn.) was successful in the eighth round and #Bryan Olson# (So.-South St. Paul, Minn.) made his in the ninth round as it went to the 10th round still tied.

#Joey Maida# (Jr.-Duluth, Minn./East) scored for the Saints. The Cougars then attempted and was denied by #Sam Reed# (So.-Eastbourne, England/Causeway). However, the officials ruled the Reed left the line early and Morris was granted another attempt. However, it did not matter as the Morris put his second attempt wide and the Saints won the shootout in exhilarating fashion 8-7.

Sam Reed (Eastbourne, England/Causeway School) had five saves in net for the Saints and made the key stops in the shootout.

This is the fourth UMAC Tournament championship in program history. This match officially goes down as a tie as the Saints have a record of 16-2-4. The Cougars have a record of 16-4-1.

The Saints still have a chance for getting a bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. It would be the first time the Saints men have reached the NCAA Tournament. The teams will be announced on Sunday evening on ncaa.com. The pairings will not be announced until Monday morning.
