MINNEAPOLIS – The St. Scholastica men's soccer team saw a 1-0 halftime lead slip away as Augsburg scored two second half goals to down the Saints 2-1 this evening at Edor Nelson Field.

The loss drops the Saints to a record of 12-2-2 overall, while the Auggies improve to 6-7-1 overall. The loss may hurt CSS's chances in getting a bid into the NCAA Tournament. The Saints are winless in the last seven meetings with the Auggies.

The Saints controlled possession in the first half, forcing the Auggies into many turnovers. The Saints took the lead when the Auggies failed to clear a corner kick and CSS had a cross that was deflected into the net by an Augsburg defender for an own goal in the 19th minute.

Augsburg was the aggressors in the second half and got a foul called in the box in the 65th minute. The penalty kick was taken by Ryan Sorensen, who capitalized to tie it at 1-1. Just eight minutes later, the Auggies had a free kick from 40 yards out and sent it to the front of the net where Alex Hildebrandt headed it in to give the Auggies a 2-1 lead. CSS got a couple of shots on net at the end, but to no avail as Augsburg went on to win 2-1.

The Auggies out-shot the Saints 13-9 in the match, including 8-4 in the second half. The Auggies had the edge in corner kicks 7-1. #Sam Reed# (So.-Eastbourne, England/Causeway) picked up the loss for the Saints, while Pascaul Venter had six saves in the win for Augsburg.

The Saints will be back at home and in conference this weekend for a pair of pivotal contests. The Saints will first host Presentation College on Saturday and then the University of Minnesota-Morris on Sunday. The Saints tied Presentation and lost to Morris earlier this season. Both matches will begin at approximately 2 p.m. following the women's match both days.
