SUPERIOR, Wis. – Bailey Husbands (Baudette, MN/Lake of the Woods HS) earned All-Tournament Team honors as The College of St. Scholastica volleyball team wrapped up the Stinger Classic with losses to UW-River Falls and UW-La Crosse on Saturday at Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium.
The Saints fell to UW-River Falls 25-17, 25-20, 25-16 before dropping a four-set match to UW-La Crosse 25-22, 23-25, 25-20, 25-20. St. Scholastica finished the tournament with a 1-3 record and moved to 4-7 overall.
Husbands totaled 54 assists Saturday, bringing her four-match tournament total to 139. She also recorded 27 digs over the weekend.
Against UW-River Falls, Lilli Rechichi (Ely, MN/Ely Memorial HS) and Ava Decker (Rochester, MN/Century HS) shared the team lead with eight kills apiece. Rechichi hit .375 with just two errors on 16 attempts and added two solo blocks. Carmen McDonough (Elk River, MN/Spectrum) contributed four kills and two block assists.
Husbands finished with 16 assists, while James Steinbach (St. Paul, MN/Highland Park) added six assists and a service ace. Cassidy Lustig (Ashland, WI/Ashland HS) led the back row with 19 digs. Lauren Kahl (Ridgeland, WI/Prairie Farm HS) served three aces, and Bryn Ziegler (Hutchinson, MN/Hutchinson HS) added two as the Saints totaled six aces.
The Falcons held St. Scholastica to a negative hitting percentage and recorded eight team blocks. Blessing Adebisi led UW-River Falls with 11 kills and six block assists.
St. Scholastica responded with a stronger offensive performance against UW-La Crosse. After dropping a closely contested opening set, the Saints recorded 15 kills against just three errors in the second, hitting .255 to even the match with a 25-23 victory.
The Eagles regained the lead with a 25-20 third set and secured the match by the same margin in the fourth.
McDonough paced the Saints with 13 kills on a .286 hitting percentage, while Tayte Borstad (Duluth, MN/Duluth East HS) added 11 kills and hit .333. Rechichi contributed nine kills, Grace Sandmeyer (Lake Crystal, MN/Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial) finished with eight, and Decker added seven.
Husbands distributed 38 assists and collected nine digs. Lustig again led the defense with 20 digs, giving her 39 for the day and 90 across the tournament. Decker added 10 digs and two service aces.
McDonough and Rechichi each recorded three blocks, including two solo stops apiece, as St. Scholastica finished with six team blocks. The Saints hit .176 with 48 kills, while UW-La Crosse totaled 58 kills on a .200 hitting percentage.
St. Scholastica opens MIAC play Friday, Sept. 25, hosting Augsburg University at 7 p.m. in Reif Gymnasium.
