BELOIT, Wisc. — St. Scholastica faced the Beloit Buccaneers in a non-conference match up Friday evening. The game was tight early, but the Saints took control midway through the second period and come away with a 5-2 victory, as five different players found the back of the net.
St. Scholastica generated early scoring chances, putting five shots on goal before
Braden Junker (Elk River, MN/Elk River HS) scored just under five minutes into the first period. Beloit responded at 10:59, and the teams went into the first intermission tied 1-1.
The Buccaneers began the second period on a power play, but the Saints' penalty kill held strong. Shortly after, however, the Buccaneers broke through to take the lead at 3:32. Following another successful penalty kill later in the second period, the Saints pulled even when
Jared Scott (Kenosha, WI/Christian Life School) scored at 9:54. Later in the period, St. Scholastica capitalized on a power play with
Evan Pahos (Parker, CO/) scoring at 14:31, assisted by
Isaac Suppin (Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada/George Elliot Secondary) and
Kieran Chung (Nottingham, Great Britain/), giving the Saints a 3-2 advantage.
The third period belonged to St. Scholastica, with the Saints' defense remaining steady.
Gavin Gunderson (Roseau, MN/Roseau HS) added a goal at 15:22, and
Jan Jyvasjarvi (Espoo, Finland/) sealed the win with a short-handed empty-net goal to close out the 5-2 victory.
Goaltender
Eino Rissanen (Sonvillier, Switzerland/Lycée Blaise-Cendrars) finished with 28 saves, while Gunderson led the Saints with five shots on goal.
The Saints (4-7-1, 1-4-1 MIAC) wrap up the weekend with a rematch against Lawrence University on Saturday, January 3, with puck drop set for 7 p.m. at the Appleton Ice Center.
