Duluth, Minn. – The Saint Scholastica women's tennis team hosted the Cardinals of Saint Mary's University today, in a MIAC Conference doubleheader. Today's match saw the Saints achieve a dominant victory over their conference opponent, finishing with a team score of 6-3.
How it Happened
Doubles
Julia Maier (Hamburg, Germany/Heidberg Gymnasium) and Paula Sendele (Icking, Germany/) opened today's contest at the No. 1 doubles spot. They were the only pair of Saints to come up short in their bout against the Cardinals, finishing with a score of 4-8.
Katia Bartels (St. Paul, Minn./Mounds View HS) and Sophia Cosgrove (Bli Bli, , Australia/), along with Maria Sosa (Mazatenango, Guatemala/Instituto de Educación a Distancia) and Mischell Benitez, appeared in No. 2 and 3 doubles, respectively. Both doubles partners for the Saints finished their matches with a win, finishing with the same dominant score of 8-3.
Singles
Sosa and Benitez both competed in the singles competition today with Benitez at the No. 3 spot, and Sosa in the No. 5 position. Benitez finished her first set, with a score of 6-1, and Sosa finished her first set scoring 6-4. Both athletes finished their matches strong, shutting out their opponents in each of their second sets.
Bartels, who was at No. 2 singles, and Claire Rewertz (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) at No. 6 both finished with very similar scores. Bartels finished her match after two sets, scoring 6-1 and 6-2, while Rewertz ended with scores of 6-2 in both sets.
Maier and Cosgrove made appearances in No. 1 and No. 4 singles. Neither Saint made it easy for their opponent, forcing a third set in both of their matches. Maier ended her day with scores of 4-6, 6-3, and 0-1. Cosgrove concluded her match, scoring 2-6, 6-4, and 0-1.
What's Next
The Saints (9-5, 3-3 MIAC) will partake in another MIAC Conference match, this time in Minneapolis against the Scotts (3-9, 1-3 MIAC) of Macalester College on Sunday, April 13. The time of the match is yet to be determined; stay tuned for further updates.
