Minneapolis, Minn. – The Saint Scholastica women's team traveled southbound today to compete against the Scots of Macalester College. This MIAC Conference doubleheader ended with the women's tennis team securing a strong 6-1 victory over the Scots.
How it Happened
Doubles
Mishell Benitez (Ambato, Ecuador/Colegio Tecnico Particular a Distancia José Martí) and Maria Sosa (Mazatenango, Guatemala/Instituto de Educación a Distancia), who appeared at No. 3 doubles, secured the only doubles shut-out victory for the Saints today. They walked in and easily ended their match, never conceding a point against them, finishing 8-0.
Paula Sendele (Icking, Germany/) and Julia Maier (Hamburg, Germany/Heidberg Gymnasium) competed at No. 1 doubles, with Katia Bartels (St. Paul, Minn./Mounds View HS) and Sophia Cosgrove (Bli Bli, , Australia/) at No. 2 doubles. Sendele and Maier concluded their match by coming out on top. While it was a close contest, the Saints' No. 1 doubles pairing was able to score eight before the Scots, finishing their match with a score of 8-7. Bartels and Cosgrove widened their margin of victory a bit, not allowing nearly as many points against, but still a few. The Saints No. 2 pairing finished their match with a score of 8-4.
Singles
M. Sosa and Claire Rewertz (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) both achieved staggering success in their singles match ups. M. Sosa, who was at No. 5 singles, followed by Rewertz at No. 6 both achieved the Saints' only shut-out victories in singles, finishing with scores of 6-0 in both sets of their matches.
Benitez, who was featured at No. 3 singles, and Cosgrove at No. 4 singles both finished following strong performances. Cosgrove only gave up a total of three points in her two singles sets, ending her match with scores of 6-2 and 6-1. Benitez was just as remarkable in her match. She allowed only five points in her two sets, ending with scores of 6-3 and 6-2.
Maier was the final Saint who won her singles match. It was not an easy win but well-earned. Her Scot opponent did not go down easy, forcing a third set after capturing a win against Maier in the second set. However, Maier came up big in the third, ending her singles match with scores of 6-1, 5-7, 1-0.
Bartels fought valiantly in her singles match, forcing a third set after finding success in her second set, but it was not enough to achieve a match win. Bartels finished her match scoring 5-7, 6-2, and 0-1.
What's Next
The Saints (10-5, 4-3 MIAC) next matchup remains up in the air with either a rescheduling against Crown College, or a face-off against Saint Benedict on Thursday, April 17.
