DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica baseball team hosted its second home game of the season against UW-Superior this afternoon at Wade Stadium. CSS got off to a fast start, leading 3-0 early, and continued its success late into the contest, coming away with an 11-1 victory against the Yellowjackets.
How it Happened
The Saints offense wasted no time getting started in the bottom of the first inning, as after Jack Tiemann (Bloomington, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) singled, Jake Schelonka (Sartell, Minn./Sartell HS) and Finley Spicer (Aberdeen, N.C./Union Pines HS (Limestone University)) both doubled, with Spicer driving in a run, giving the Saints a 1-0 lead. Schelonka would score on an RBI from Damian Tamayo Vera (Miami, FL./Felix Varela Senior HS) and Ryan Garlick (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids HS (Iowa Central CC)) would later drive in a run in the inning on an RBI single, expanding the Saints lead to 3-0 early in the game.
Garrett Green (Riverside, CA/Martin Luther King HS) escaped a jam in the top of the third inning after a leadoff Yellowjacket double, as UW-Superior was left empty handed, still trailing 3-0.
The Yellowjackets brought its first run across in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI single, but the Saints still sat in front by a score of 3-1.
Schelonka singled with one out in the bottom half of the fifth inning, then promptly stole second base to put a runner in scoring position. With two outs, Tamayo Vera would pick up another RBI on a single to score Schelonka and give the Saints its three-run lead back.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Sam Shopbell (Prior Lake, MN/Prior Lake HS (Fayetteville CC)) singled to lead things off and stole second base, followed by a Tiemann walk to put two men on for CSS. Schelonka then picked up another base hit, driving in Shopbell to propel the Saints in front 5-1. Spicer then doubled in a run, as Tamayo Vera doubled in two more runs for CSS, as the lead now sat at 8-1 after six innings of play.
The Saints picked up three singles to begin the bottom of the eighth inning from Tiemann, Schelonka, and Spicer. With the bases loaded, Tamayo Vera brought his RBI total to six on the day with a two-RBI single. With the Saints just needing to secure one final run to complete the mercy rule, Adam Braun (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS (Central Lakes CC)) answered the call, singling to left to bring in a run and give CSS an 11-1 victory in today's contest.
