Duluth, Minn. – The Saint Scholastica women's tennis team hosted the Carlton Knights in a MIAC Conference doubleheader at Longview Tennis Club. Today's match ended with the Saints taking a tough 9-1 loss versus the Knights.
How it Happened
Doubles
Mischell Benitez and Maria Sosa (Mazatenango, Guatemala/Instituto de Educación a Distancia) were the only Saints to claim victory in doubles. Competing at No. 3 doubles, Benitez and M. Sosa claimed victory after a tiebreaker, scoring 9(7)-7(1).
Julia Maier (Hamburg, Germany/Heidberg Gymnasium) and Katia Bartels (St. Paul, Minn./Mounds View HS) at No. 1 doubles, and Paula Sendele (Icking, Germany/) and Sophia Cosgrove (Bli Bli, , Australia/) at No. 2 doubles all concluded their matches short of victory. Maier and Bartels scored 9-3, and Sendele and Cosgrove finished, getting shut out 8-0.
Singles
No Saint was victorious in singles, but Bartels came the closest. At No. 2 singles, she forced a third set, but fell short, scoring 6-4, 4-6, 1(10)-0(8). Sendele also put up a good fight against the Knights. While she only lasted two sets, she managed to end with scores of 6-1 and 7-5 at No. 6 singles.
Cosgrove, at No.4 and M. Sosa at No. 5, were both dispatched by their opponents. They both scored similarly, with Cosgrove ending 6-1 and 6-2, and M. Sosa finishing 6-1 and 6-3, but neither performance was enough for the win.
Maier at No. 1 and Benitez at No. 3 were both handled quickly by the Knights after just two sets each. Maier ended her match after scoring 6-0 and 6-2, with Benitez scoring 6-0 and 6-1.
What's Next
The Saints (11-6, 5-4 MIAC) will host their senior day match against the Gusties (23-7, 9-0 MIAC) of Gustavus Adolphus College, tomorrow, Monday, April 27. Match time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
