Collegetown, Minn – The College of Saint Scholastica women's tennis team took to the road, headed south to compete against the Bennies of Saint Benedict's University in a MIAC Conference faceoff. Today's match ended with the Saints taking an outstanding 8-1 victory over the Bennies.
How it Happened
Doubles
Both Saint pairings, Sophia Cosgrove (Bli Bli, , Australia/) and Katia Bartels (St. Paul, Minn./Mounds View HS), along with Mishell Benitez (Ambato, Ecuador/Colegio Tecnico Particular a Distancia José Martí) and Maria Sosa (Mazatenango, Guatemala/Instituto de Educación a Distancia), who competed at No. 2 and 3 doubles respectively, finished their doubles matches with identical results. Both pairs finished their matches after scoring 8-2.
Julia Maier (Hamburg, Germany/Heidberg Gymnasium) and Paula Sendele (Icking, Germany/), who were at No. 1 doubles, put in their best effort but ended up short of victory, finishing after scoring 2-8.
Singles
Bartels and Benitez put on the most dominant displays of talent in their singles matches. Bartels claimed victory after only giving up one point in both of her sets, scoring 6-1 in both sets. Benitez managed to shut her opponent out in the first set, and only conceded two points in the second, rounding out her day with set scores of 6-0 and 6-2.
Maier and M. Sosa were also dominant in their performances, winning in two sets each. Maier, who competed at No. 1 singles, closed her match with scores of 6-4 and 6-3. M. Sosa gave up one less point, finishing with scores of 6-2 and 6-4.
Cosgrove and Claire Rewertz (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) were forced into third sets from the Bennies, though it ws close Cosgrove claimed victory after scoring 4-6, 6-3, and 7-5 after three. Rewetz also made it a tight contest, claiming victory after scoring 3-6, 6-4, and 1-0.
What's Next
The Saints (11-5, 5-3 MIAC) will finally return home to compete against the Knights (12-2, 7-0 MIAC) of Carlton College on Saturday, April 26; match time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
