Women's Tennis Split Second Day of Competition on Florida Trip

The St. Scholastica women's tennis team competed in the second and third matches of their spring break trip in Orlando, Florida against the Firebirds of Carthage College, and the Barons of Franciscan University. Their first match, against the Firebirds, ended in a close 4-3  loss. However, the Saints achieved a clean 7-0 shutout victory over the Barons in their second match of the day.  

How it Happened

Against the Firebirds

Doubles

Julia Maier (Hamburg, Germany/Heidberg Gymnasium) and Paula Sendele (Icking, ,DE) opened things off once again for the Saints. In their match, they prevailed against their opponent, finishing with a score of 6-4.

Katia Bartels (St. Paul, Minn./Mounds View HS) and Sophia Cosgrove (Bli Bli, , AU) were up second for the Saints. After a well-fought match, they ended just short of the win, finishing with a score of 3-6.

Finally, Annika Lundell (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) and Mishell Benitez (Ambato, Ecuador/Colegio Tecnico Particular a Distancia José Martí) closed things out for the Saints. They were able to capture a win against the Firebirds with a score of 6-4.

Singles
Maier started the Saints singles effort today. After forcing a tiebreaker in the first set, she could not capture a victory, finishing with scores of 6-7, and 2-6.

Bartels was second for the Saints once again. She was able to close out her match in two sets, finishing with scores of 6-3 and 6-1. 

Cosgrove competed third for the Saints. She too achieved a win in just two sets, finishing with scores of 6-2, and 6-4.

Fourth for the Saints was Sendele. She fought well against the Firebirds but came up short, scoring 2-6 and 5-7 in two sets. 

Hailey Hokanson (Sauk Centre, Minn./) made her first appearance of the day; she appeared fifth for the Saints. In her appearance, she scored 1-6 in her two sets, coming up shy of the win.

Addison Bultema () also made her first appearance of the day. She, too, only played two sets, scored 3-6 and 0-6.

Against the Barons

Doubles

Julia Maier (Hamburg, Germany/Heidberg Gymnasium) and Paula Sendele (Icking, ,DE) started the doubles section of the Saints' second match securing  a 6-4 win. 

Mishell Benitez (Ambato, Ecuador/Colegio Tecnico Particular a Distancia José Martí) and Sophia Cosgrove (Bli Bli, , AU) were second up for the Saints against the Barons. In their match, they secured a strong 6-4 victory.

Annika Lundell (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) and Maria Sosa (Mazatenango, Guatemala/) closed out the doubles section of the match in a powerful way. Not only did they win their match, but they ended things off with a 6-0 shutout victory. 

Singles
Bartels started the singles portion of the second match for the Saints today. She closed her match decisively in two sets, scoring 6-0 and 1-6 to achieve the win. 

Benitez was the second athlete in the singles portion of the second match. In her second match of the day, she too closed out the win in two sets, scoring 6-2 and 6-0.

Sosa made another appearance today in the second match for the Saints. In her singles outing, she accomplished a clean sweep, scoring 6-0 in both of her sets.

Claire Rewertz (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) also appeared for the first time of the day. She was very close to also achieving a shut-out victory, winning in two sets with scores of 6-1 and 6-0. 

Bella Vincent (Hibbing, MN) was fourth for the Saints in the singles portion of the second match. She dominated her competition as well, scoring 6-1 and 6-0.

Renata Sosa (Mazatenango, Guatemala/Instituto de Educación a Distancia) was the final athlete for the Saints today. She was able to close out her match in two sets, scoring 6-4 and 6-1. 

What's Next
The Saints will stay in Orlando for their fourth match of the trip against the Bears (1-2) of Ursinus College, on Tuesday, March 11. Match time is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
