Women's Tennis Split Day Against Beavers and Bulldogs in Bemidji

Duluth, Minn. – The Saint Scholastica Women's tennis team traveled to Bemidji, Minn. to go head-to-head against the Beavers of Bemidji State University, and the University of Minnesota Duluth. Today's match against the Beavers ended with the Saints triumphing over the Beavers with a final score of 5-4. The Saints played the Bulldogs later on and fell 3-6.

Against Bemidji State University

Doubles

The first match the Saints played in today's long contest featured Julia Maier (Hamburg, Germany/Heidberg Gymnasium) and Paula Sendele (Icking, ,DE). After a hard-fought effort, the Saints fell just short of the win with a final score in match one of 3-6. 

Katia Bartels (St. Paul, Minn./Mounds View HS) and Sophia Cosgrove (Bli Bli, , AU) were up next for the Saints. Competing early in the day gave them an opportunity to give the Saints a good foundation, and they did that with a dominant 6-2 victory in their doubles match. 

Finally, Maria Sosa (Mazatenango, Guatemala/) and Mishell Benitez (Ambato, Ecuador/Colegio Tecnico Particular a Distancia José Martí) rounded out the Saints' doubles. They too took advantage of the situation they had before them, winning with a score of 6-4 and giving the Saints the team lead. 

Singles
Maier started things off for the Saints' singles matches. Maier lost her first set of the match but came back against adversity and won her next two sets, securing the win in her singles match, recording scores of 3-6, 6-3, and 11-9.

Bartels was up again for the Saints. Bartels would only play two sets and unfortunately take two losses, recording scores of 2-6, and 3-6.

Benitez was next up for the Saints, and it only took her two sets to secure the win for the Saints, recording scores of 6-2, and 6-3.

Cosgrove was the fourth athlete up for the Saints in singles matches. Cosgrove was able to dominate her competition is two matches, scoring 7-5 in the first and 6-1 in the second. 

Hailey Hokanson (Sauk Centre, Minn./) made her first appearance in the singles matches today for the Saints, she only played two sets and lost both sets. 

Addy Bultema also made her first appearance in the singles matches. Unfortunately, she too would be eliminated after two sets. 

Against the University of Minnesota Duluth

Doubles


The first doubles match of the second game for the Saints started once again with Maier and Sendele. Unlike last time, the Saints first duo dominated their opponent, winning 6-2. 

Chloe Hasbargen (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji HS) and Annika Lundell (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) were next up for the Saints. After fighting hard to the end, they fell just short, recording a final score of 4-6. 

The final duo for the Saints doubles match ups consisted of Renata Sosa (Mazatenango, Guatemala/Instituto de Educación a Distancia) and Bella Vincent (Hibbing, MN). They too fought well against their matchup but were bested in the end with a final score of 0-6.

Singles
Opening the Saints singles matches against UMD was Bartels. Bartels scored 6-7, and 6-4 in her first two sets, forcing a third set. But she fell just short in the third set fighting strong but falling 9-11.

Benitez was the second competitor for the Saints. Her match was brought to three sets as well, after scoring 7-6, and 4-6 in her first two. The third set ended with a score of 10-8, giving Benitez the win.

Cosgrove was third up for the Saints' singles athletes. Her match also went to three sets. The first two ended with scores of 6-4, and 6-7 *5. Her third set ended with a final score of 8-10.

M. Sosa was up next for the Saints, she was the fourth Saint in a row to go into three sets. Her first two ended with scores of 6-2, and 2-6. She fell just short in the third set with a final score of 8-10.

Finally, Clair Rewertz ended the day for the Saints. After two well-fought sets, she came up just short, scoring 3-6, and 5-7. 

What's Next
The Saints (1-1 0-0 MAIC) will travel to Virginia, Minn. to compete against the Pipers (4-3, 0-1 MIAC) of Hamline University. The Match will be held at the Virginia Indoor Tennis and Pickleball Club, the match is scheduled for Saturday, February 15 at 1:30 P.M.
