Saints Hold Until Last Minute in Close Contest Against the Cobbers

Duluth, Minn. – The Saint Scholastica Women's basketball team hosted the Cobbers of Concordia College Moorehead in today's doubleheader.  The first game, featuring the Women's basketball team, ended with a final score of 71- 76, with the Cobbers taking the victory in game one of today's doubleheader.

How it Happened

First Quarter

Today's matchup opened up with the Cobbers making the first shot of the game, a layup, which gave them the first points of the game 18 seconds in. Their shot was quickly answered by the Saints with a layup and free throw.

The Cobbers came back to score ten points, while on defense only holding the Saints to four points. The Saints came back out of that whole, now holding the Cobbers to two points. The Saints, led by Jackie Johnson (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji HS) this run, scored a layup, with three three-point shots.

The Cobbers got the last laugh in the quarter, scoring a three-point shot of their own.

The first Quarter came to a close, with a score of 18-16.

Second Quarter

In the first two minutes of the second quarter, both teams held each other even, only giving up a combined eight points, two for each team. The Cobbers broke the evenness with a pair of free throws and a layup that they made, making it a two-point Saints lead.

The Saints went on to achieve a nice run of their own, scoring seven points in a row before the Cobbers were able to make their three-point shot.

At this point, the Cobbers controlled the game going into halftime, scoring five more points, and holding the Saints to two points.

The second quarter ended with a score of 33-30.

Third Quarter

The third quarter saw the Saints outscore the Cobbers eight to four in the first three minutes of action.

While the Cobbers' defense showed up in the third, the Saints offense was able to outperform their adversaries, scoring five more points. The Cobbers were on the line after the Saints five points and sank both free throws.

Both teams went on to trade layups; and later on, the Saints' Ava Haus (St. Michael/St. Michael-Albertville High School) scored a three-point shot that the Cobbers could only answer with a layup.

The Cobbers closed out the period scoring seven unanswered, making it a two-point game, with the Saints still ahead.

Fourth Quarter

This time, the Saints opened up with two layups. But the Cobbers were right there with two layups and a free throw of their own. The Saints were only up by one point after the Cobbers' brief run.

The Cobbers scored another free throw, but that was quickly followed by a Saints layup.

The Cobbers outscored the Saints in the next two minutes, scoring four total points, to the Saints' three. Fortunately for the Saints, they remained ahead by one.

In the next two minutes, the Saints lost their lead, getting outscored by the Cobbers, who scored five points to their three.

Daysia Simmons (Albertville, MN/St. Michael HS) hit a three-point shot to tie the game up at 66-66, but her three was quickly followed by a Cobbers run. Concordia went on to score eight more points, unfortunately, the Saints were held to five.
