SUPERIOR, Wisc. — St. Scholastica men's hockey faced off against the UW-Superior (UWS) Yellowjackets in the consolation game of the Superior Showdown on Saturday evening. The Saints and Yellowjackets were tied 2-2 midway through the second period, but UWS pulled away with three unanswered goals to secure a 5-2 victory.
The Yellowjackets opened the scoring at the 7:38 mark of the first period and added another in the final moments of the frame to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
The Saints' offense responded in the second. On an early power play,
Evan Pahos (Parker, CO/) scored at 3:03, assisted by
Jan Jyvasjarvi (Espoo, Finland/) and
Wyatt Wurst (Edina, MN/Edina HS). At 10:05,
Luke McCarthy (Cottage Grove, MN/Park HS) tallied his first goal as a Saint with
Braden Junker (Elk River, MN/Elk River HS) providing the assist, tying the game 2-2. The Yellowjackets regained the lead with their third score of the game at 15:29, and carried the 3-2 advantage into the third frame.
The final period had 16 combined penalties, contributing to the 25 total in the game. The Yellowjackets capitalized, scoring once shorthanded and once on a power play, to close out the 5-2 win
The Saints (3-5-1, 1-2-1 MIAC) will return to conference play next weekend with a series against Hamline University. They open the match up in St. Paul at TRIA Rink, with puck drop scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday, December 5.
