Volleyball Achieves Dominant Sweep Against Carleton Knights

Duluth, Minn. – The Saint Scholastica volleyball team hosted the Knights of Carleton College, a MIAC Conference opponent, tonight, Friday, October 3. Tonight's conference match ended with the Saints handily taking a 3-0 victory over the Knights after exhilarating action.

How it Happened

First Set

The Saints wasted no time asserting themselves, jumping out to an early lead behind sharp setting from Natalie Yackley (New Ulm, MN/New Ulm HS). She dished out 30 assists on the night, and her early distribution helped Abby Zins (Chisago Lakes, MN/Chisago Lakes High School) and Ava Swangstue (Grand Forks, N.D./Red River HS) get rolling at the net. Zins hit an impressive .533 for the match, leading the team with nine kills, while Swangstue added steady offense and blocks to keep Carleton off balance. With efficient hitting (.286 in the set) and strong serving, St. Scholastica closed the opener comfortably, 25–14.

Second Set
Carleton pushed back in the second frame, forcing several ties early on, but the Saints' balance proved too much. Lindsey Baribeau (Biwabik, MN/Mesabi East HS) came alive, powering home kills from the outside and contributing at the net with blocks. Mikala Peterson (Mora, MN/Mora HS) and Cassidy Lustig (Ashland, WI/Ashland HS) added key points in the middle, while the back row, led by Bryn Ziegler (Hutchinson, MN/Hutchinson HS) and Ava Decker (Rochester, MN/Century HS), dug in to keep long rallies alive. A late surge sealed the set 25–18, giving the Saints a 2–0 match lead.

Third Set
The Knights made the third set the tightest of the night, battling point-for-point and forcing nine ties. But the Saints never wavered. Zins once again delivered in crunch time, while Baribeau and Swangstue combined for timely kills and blocks. Ziegler's steady defense (nine digs) and Decker's scrappy play in the back court proved crucial as the Saints edged out the set 25–23 to secure the sweep.

What's Next
The Saints (9-7, 2-1 MIAC) will once again play a MIAC Conference opponent at home, this time the Cardinals (8-8, 1-0 MIAC) of Saint Mary's University. This next match is scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday, October 4 at 3 P.M.
