DULUTH, Minn. — The College of St. Scholastica women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to visiting Augsburg University on Senior Day at Harkins Field in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup.
Augsburg's Jayla Ponce netted the game's opening goal in the 38th minute, capitalizing on sustained pressure in the attacking third. The junior forward added her second in the 75th minute to double the Augsburg lead.
St. Scholastica responded late, pulling one back in the 83rd minute when senior forward Tenley Voth (Farmington, MN/Farmington HS) buried a shot off a well-placed assist from senior midfielder Peyton Mathiasen (St. Cloud, MN/St. Cloud Cathedral HS). The Saints continued to press in the closing minutes, with Voth forcing a clutch save from Augsburg goalkeeper Claire Smothers in the 89th minute, but couldn't find the equalizer.
Smothers finished with four saves, while Saints freshman goalkeeper Rylee Senich (Cloquet, MN/Cloquet HS) turned in a strong performance with seven stops.
Augsburg controlled much of the first half offensively, outshooting the Saints and maintaining possession. The Saints saw chances from freshman forward Anna Manion (Superior, WI/Superior HS) and senior forward Kaitlyn Sautter (Princeton, MN./Princeton HS) but couldn't beat Smothers before the break.
St. Scholastica honored its senior class at halftime, with a crowd on hand to celebrate their contributions to the program.
With the loss, St. Scholastica moves to 4-9-3 overall and 2-4-2 in league action. The Saints are back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 22 for a road contest against Macalester College in a MIAC matchup at 7:30 p.m.
