Volleyball Comes Up Just Short in Five-Set Thriller at Bethel

SAINT PAUL, Minn. — The College of St. Scholastica battled to the final point on Wednesday night but ultimately fell short in a tightly contested 3-2 loss to Bethel University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup, with set scores of 25-18, 25-21, 25-16, 25-16, 15-11 in favor of the Royals.

The Saints showed resilience all night, rallying back twice to even the match, but the Royals held on late in the decisive fifth set to escape with the victory.

Set 1 saw Bethel take early control with strong serving and consistent offense, pulling away late for a 25-18 win.

St. Scholastica responded in Set 2, with senior middle blocker Lindsey Baribeau (Biwabik, MN/Mesabi East HS) leading the charge offensively. A key service run by sophomore defensive specialist Lauren Kahl (Ridgeland, WI/Prairie Farm HS) helped the Saints take the momentum as they closed out the set 25-21 to even the match.

Bethel regained control in Set 3, using a series of Saints errors and a strong block to win 25-16. However, the Saints bounced right back in Set 4, jumping out to an early lead behind junior libero Bryn Ziegler's (Hutchinson, MN/Hutchinson HS) serving and Baribeau's offense. St. Scholastica controlled much of the set, winning 25-16 and forcing a decisive fifth.

In Set 5, the teams traded points early, but a key service ace and block from Bethel turned the tide. Despite kills from freshman outside hitter Ava Decker (Rochester, MN/Century HS) down the stretch, the Royals held on to take the final set 15-11.

With the loss, St. Scholastica moves to 11-10 overall and 3-3 in league action. The Saints are back in action on Friday, Oct. 17 for a home contest against St. Catherine University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup at 7 p.m. inside of the Burns Wellness Commons.
