Women’s Basketball Continues Winning Ways with Victory Over Saint Benedict’s

Collegeville, Minn. – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team traveled this afternoon to take on the Bennies from Saint Benedict. The Saints jumped out to a quick lead, taking a double-digit lead into the halftime break, and was able to keep their foots on the gas, cruising to  a victory today by a score of 74-51. 

How it Happened

First Quarter

After the Bennies jumped out to a quick lead, Kloey Lind (Pine City, Minn./Pine City HS) scored the first four points for the Saints, while Jada Bierschbach (Richmond, Minn./Rocori HS) added a layup, cutting the Bennies lead to 8-6. 

Moments later, Daysia Simmons (Albertville, MN/St. Michael HS) knocked down a three-pointer, with Ava Riegel (Rogers, MN/Totino Grace High School) getting credited with an assist, making the score 12-9 in favor of Saint Benedict. 

After Lind got a layup to fall, Jackie Johnson (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji HS) tied the game up at 13-13 with a jumper, and ultimately gave CSS their first lead of the afternoon on a three-pointer. 

Ava Haus (St. Michael/St. Michael-Albertville High School) scored the Saints' next five points, which was followed by a layups from Madison Kenyon (Woodstock, IL/Marian Central Catholic HS) and Hope Carlson (Proctor, Minn./Proctor HS), as the Saints led 25-20 after one quarter of play. 

Second Quarter

Johnson and Haus continued their success to open the second quarter, as the Saints lead sat at 31-23. 

Kenyon and Carlson both added another set of layups to push the Saints lead to double-digits. 

Just a few possessions later, Johnson and Kenyon both added to their total, with Johnson nailing a three-pointer and Kenyon getting a layup to go. 

Lind closed out the half for CSS offensively with a layup, as CSS led 42-30 at the halftime break. 

Third Quarter

Lind was able to record two of the first three field goals for CSS to open the half, with Gabby Voigt (St. Michael. Minn./St. Michael- Albertville HS) recording her first points on a three-pointer. 

Midway through the quarter, Lind added two more baskets to her total, tallying layups on consecutive possessions to push the Saints lead to 58-37. 

Johnson and Lind closed out the quarter for the Saints scoring, as CSS led 63-40 heading into the final quarter. 

Fourth Quarter

Lind led off the quarter for the Saints to start, getting a layup to fall before Voigt knocked down her second three-pointer of the game, expanding their lead to 70-46. 

The Bennies added a pair of field goals late in the quarter, as Haus and Carlson added baskets to end the game, with CSS prevailing by a score of 74-51. 

Top Performers

  • Kloey Lind (Pine City, Minn./Pine City HS) notched her ninth career double-double in the win today, which breaks the program's previous record of eight held by Allison Sanderberg. Lind recorded 22 points to go along with 10 rebounds in the contest. 
  • Jackie Johnson (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji HS) recorded 13 points in the win today, notching three three-pointers as well. 
  • Ava Haus (St. Michael/St. Michael-Albertville High School) fell one rebound short of a double-double, logging 13 points to go along with nine rebounds.

The Saints (9-6, 6-3 MIAC) will be back in action next Wednesday, January 22, where they will travel to take on the Royals from Bethel. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
