Saints Unable to Overcome Red-Hot Gusties

St. Peter, Minn. — The St. Scholastica men's basketball team traveled this afternoon to take on the Gusties from Gustavus Adolphus College. How it Happened
First Half

The Gusties jumped out to a quick 11-0 lead before Koy Nelson (Port Wing, Wis./South Shore HS) scored the first points for the Saints this afternoon on a jumper.

A few possessions later, Connor Forgue nailed his first field goal of the game on a three-pointer to cut the deficit to 13-5.

Gustavus went on another brief run before Forgue would score his second basket of the half, as the Saints trailed 24-7 halfway through the first half.

Forgue would nail the Saints' next two field goals, but the Gusties still held a commanding lead, leading 35-12.

Later in the half, Moe Washington (Silver Spring, Md./Hibbing Community College) and Nelson would score on back-to-back possessions, with Washington scoring on a layup and Nelson getting a three-pointer to fall. 

CSS got baskets from Tanner Thomson (Woodbury, Minn./Stillwater HS), Nelson, and Aaron Keykal (Princeton, Minn./Princeton HS) down the homestretch of the opening half, cutting the Gustie lead to just 41-30.

Kai Penney (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo Highschool) scored the last field goal for CSS in the first half with a minute and a half left, as Gustavus took a 45-32 lead into the halftime break.

Second Half
Keykal and Nelson scored the first field goals for CSS to begin the second half, with the Gusties still holding on to a 12-point lead.

Following Penney's second field goal of the game, Gustavus went on a 9-0 run to bring their lead back to 61-43.

Moments later, Nelson would drain another three-pointer followed by a layup from Drelyn Jones (Leyden, Il./Leyden Highschool) to make the score 63-45.

Jones nailed his second field goal of the half with a three-pointer to make the score 69-48.

Gustavus was able to pull away with an 18-1 run to make the score 87-49 with nine minutes to play.

Jones could get another layup to fall, followed by a pair of field goals from Nelson and a three-pointer from Keykal gave the Saints a run of their own, but Gustavus still held a 91-58 lead. 

Forgue and Jones scored the next two CSS field goals, with Jones securing another three-pointer with five and a half minutes to play. 

Penney added to his total on the afternoon with back-to-back layups just a few possessions later to make the score 101-67.

In the closing minutes of the game, Jordan Lyon (Blaine, Minn./Blaine Highschool) would secure his first field goal of the game on a layup, and the Saints also got free throws to fall from Ethan Russell (Minneapolis, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) and French Biltcliffe (Oxford, England/Busche Academy), but the Gusties took today's contest by a score of 112-76.

Too Performers
- Koy Nelson (Port Wing, Wis./South Shore HS) led the Saints today with 23 points while also adding three field goals from beyond the arc. 
- Drelyn Jones (Leyden, Il./Leyden Highschool) added 12 points off the bench while also recording two rebounds and a steal.

The Saints (6-8, 2-3 MIAC) will be back in action next Saturday, January 18, when they travel to take on Saint John's. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
