Box Score

Superior, WI. - The St. Scholastica Women's soccer team traveled across the bridge tonight for a 7:30 p.m. game against the University of Wisconsin-Superior. Despite strong efforts from the Saints in the second half, they fell 2-0 to the Yellowjackets.

How it Happened

1st Half

To start the game, the Yellowjackets took possession, taking their first shot on target just 46 seconds into play. The Saints were quick to react, making a run for the offensive end, and maintaining this for several minutes. Tenley Voth (Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS) got a shot off but was denied by the UW-Superior goalkeeper.

The Yellowjackets had the momentum in their favor, taking advantage of a turnover and making their way back down the field to score the game's opening goal at 4:20. Yellowjackets led 1-0.

Both teams were bringing the energy, with multiple battles near the sidelines, resulting in a series of throw-ins, giving each team time to reset. After more than 15 minutes of neutral zone play, the Yellowjackets made another push for the goal, but the immense amount of pressure from the Saints' defense resulted in a shot off target at 21:08.

UW-Superior was able to capitalize on another opportunity after a scramble in front of the Saints net, the Yellowjackets led 2-0 at 26:24.

Despite the Yellowjackets keeping most of the possession, freshman Mariah Hernesman (Duluth, MN) attempted to get a shot off but missed wide. Just eight minutes later, Hernesman battled with two Yellowjacket defenders to take another attempt at a goal, but was unlucky, just barely missing the goalpost.

At 41:47, the Yellowjackets set up to take a freekick just outside the 18-yard box, looking for their 3rd goal of the game, ultimately missing high over the crossbar. The clock ran down and the first half ended with a score of 2-0 in favor of the Yellowjackets.

2nd Half

The second half started differently than the first, with the Saints keeping the majority of the opening minutes in the offensive end. But the Saints were unable to get a shot off in the first 10 minutes.

The Yellowjackets received a free kick after a Saints player fouled, UW-Superior looked to put the free kick on the net but was heavily denied by the wall of Blue and Gold protecting their goalkeeper.

At 59:23, the Saints had their third on-target shot of the game, coming from Peyton Mathiasen (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS), with the help of a free kick from the Saints. The shot was denied by the Yellowjackets goalkeeper.

The roles quickly reversed as a Yellowjacket player was able to make two shot attempts in 30 seconds, both were shut down by the Saints' defense.

The Saints were unable to find the back of the net in the remaining 15 minutes of play and both teams were scoreless in the second half. The Yellowjackets took the win with a final score of 2-0.
