Box Score Hastings, MN.- The St. Scholastica Volleyball team was on the road Friday, September 27 to play their second MIAC matchup of the year versus Carleton College. In an intense four-set match between the Saints and the Knights, the Saints were defeated 3-1.
How It Happened
Set 1
The first set of this MIAC matchup began with a back and forth battle between the Saints and Knights. Both teams were fighting to take the lead but remained within one point of each other until the Knights led 9-4.
The Saints did not stay down for long, and after a quick kill from Ava Swangstue (Grand Forks, N.D./Red River HS), the team was right back in the game. Cassidy Lustig (Ashland, WI/Ashland HS) and Lindsey Baribeau (Biwabik, Minn./Mesabi East HS) helped continue the momentum with more front row offensive plays.
The Saints continued to fight with their defense flying across the floor to keep the ball alive and keep the offense active. Their efforts fell just short for set one and the Saints lost 17-25.
Set 2
Set two started with a bang for the Saints as they took the 5-1 lead over the Knights with kills from Katlyn Jones (Bloomer, WI/Bloomer HS), Mikala Peterson (Mora, Minn./Mora HS), and Swangstue.
The Saints continued to extend their lead and gain momentum after going on a five point run with two kills from Jones and a service ace from Bryn Ziegler (Hutchinson, Minn./Hutchinson HS).
Swangstue was a powerhouse for the Saints and recorded two more kills for the Saints as they increased the margin to 18-11. St. Scholastica's front row took control and had another three-point run at 22-15 with Grace Myhre (Aberdeen, S.D./Aberdeen Central HS), Baribeau, and Jones all recording kills.
The Saints finished set two with a service ace from Jones to win 25-20.
Set 3
Jones had three of St. Scholastica's first five points, with two being serve aces, to put the Saints ahead 5-2 early on in the third set.
After going point for point with the Knights, the Saints began to trail 14-9, but this was short lived as the Saints fought back quickly with another five point run. Peterson was marked for two more kills during this run and Baribeau for one, with the other two points being errors for Carlton.
The Saints continued to battle with the Knights late in the third set but came up short and lost 19-25.
Set 4
Both teams came into set four with a fire underneath them and neither team could manage to pull ahead with a lead. Peterson remained a source of points for the Saints, recording three kills in the first four points of the game giving the Saints a 4-3 lead over Carleton.
A stellar block from Jones and Swangstue increased the Saints lead to two points at 7-5 in the set.
Points continued to go back and forth between the two teams with two more kills for Peterson. The Saints found another opportunity for points and scored four consecutively to bring them just under Carlton at 23-24. With the need to win by two, the game headed to extra points.
The fight for victory continued after regulation with a kill from Jones to tie the Saints and Knights at 27-27. This fight continued with another kill for Peterson (30-29) and Swangstue (31-31).
After many long rallies and amazing saves the Saints came up short and lost both the set (31-33) and the match (1-3) to make them 1-1 in the MIAC conference.
