Volleyball Heads Home With a 3-1 Record at Ripon Tournament

Ripon, WI. - The Saints wrapped up their final four-game tournament of the season today with a 3-1 weekend record. 

Day one consisted of two evening matches against Carroll University and Ripon College. The Saints split the matches with a 1-1 record heading to day two. The team fell short of Carroll in three straight sets but turned around and beat Ripon in three straight. 

The Saints began their second day of the Ripon Tournament with a game against Maranatha Baptist University where they won 3-0. The Saint's final match of the day and tournament was against Alverno College where they won three sets to zero to leave with two wins on the day.   The Saints finished the tournament with two back to back sweeps over Maranatha Baptist University and Alverno College leaving. 

Game 1- Carroll University

The Pioneers took the first point of the match, with a massive kill from their outside hitter. This was going to set the tone for the rest of the game. The Saints rallied back and forth with the Pioneers, maintaining their position on the court. The Saints' big hitters Lindsey Baribeau (Biwabik, Minn./Mesabi East HS) and Mikala Peterson (Mora, Minn./Mora HS) gave the team their only lead of the set, 4-2. But the Pioneers retaliated with an eight point run. As the score hit 20-10 in favor of the Pioneers, the Saints took three points in a row off of kills and attack errors to try to recuperate. The Saints trailed through the remainder of the set, as the Pioneers hit set point, Swangstue tallied one last kill. The Pioneers took set one 25-18. 

Set two opened up with dominating play from the Pioneers, as they tallied seven unanswered points. The Saints came close to catching up at the 10-8 mark, still down by two, Bryn Ziegler (Hutchinson, Minn./Hutchinson HS) sent two immaculate serves over the net that the Pioneers could not recover. The battle was consistently back and forth in the second half of the set. But the Pioneers took the set 25-20. 

Set three started with a 4-1 lead for the Saints, three of those points being kills. The intensity of the third set was significantly more intense than the first two, with multiple lengthy rallies. At the midway point, the Saints led 16-15, looking to take the game to extra sets. The Pioneers were dedicated to closing it out in three, as they retaliated on all point returns. The score hit 24-24, the crowd was on their feet. Going into extra points, the Pioneers took point 25, capitalizing on a Saints attack error. The match point came from a Pioneers service ace. The Pioneers took set three 26-24 and won the game 3-0. 
 

Game 2- Ripon College

The Saints came marching in with four straight points to start the first set, capitalizing off of three straight attack errors from the Red Hawks. After some attempts of retaliation from the Hawks, the Saints yet again found their stride over the next couple of rallies, finding themselves at a score of 10-4. The Hawks made an attempt to regain composure by scoring three straight and pushed the score to 16-15, but the overwhelming attack of the Saint's volleyball team proved to be too much. Five straight points were tallied up for the Saints, led by emphatic kills from both Kaytlin Jones and Swangstue. The Saints turned up the heat and finished the set with a final score of 25-18, getting them off to a great start in the game against the Hawks.

Set two started off neck and neck, with points being scored from both teams. The Saints found themselves down 4-6 early but rallied behind two straight kills from CC Seibel (Bloomer, Wi/Bloomer HS). This allowed the team to push forward, going on a 7-2 point run to get them back on top. The Hawks responded with a four point run, and the two teams battled back and forth. The Saints found their rhythm behind Jones, who scored three straight kills in a five-point run for the team, which gave them the momentum they needed to separate themselves from the Red Hawks. The Saints took yet another set with a final score of 25-22, putting them on top 2-0.

After a bit of a slow 0-3 start in the third set, the Saints rallied back to push for an even 10-10 score. The Hawks fought to an 11-13 score with three straight points, two of which came from service aces. The Saints then poured on an onslaught of attacks, scoring points from kills and aces, led by Jones and Swangstue. The two combined for nine of the thirteen points scored in a 13-2 run, putting the score to 24-15. The Hawks made a fleeting attempt to come back, but it was too little too late, as the Saints won the set 25-23 and finished the game with a decisive 3-0 victory.
 

Game 3- Maranatha Baptist

To start the set St. Scholastica went on a four-point run with server Cassidy Lustig () having three consecutive service aces. They then quickly sided out to go on another nine-point run which was led by many front-row kills. The team managed to stay ahead by heavy amounts with big kills from Swangstue and Seibel. The Saints finished off the set 25-9 with two massive kills that were both assisted by setter Grace Myhre (Aberdeen, S.D./Aberdeen Central HS). 

The Saints managed to start off set two with another big lead of 5-1. There was a small back and forth battle between Maranatha and the Saints that was ended by a kill from Swangstue. This allowed for the Saints to go on another run of eight giving them a margin of 10 points between the teams (14-4). The Saints had no issues staying in the lead and finished out the set 25-14 after a kill from freshman Seibel. 

After repetitive errors on the Maranatha side, the Saints pulled ahead in the third set 7-1. Shortly after Baribeau put the ball away with a huge swing that allowed the Saints to gain momentum and pull away once again from Maranatha. Of the six point run server Myhre had three service aces and allowed the team to lead in points 18-7. The set was ended shortly after by a kill from Riley Panger (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS), assisted by, Natalie Yackley (New Ulm, Minn./New Ulm HS) to end the set 25-14 and leave the Saints victorious in a three set match. 
 

Game 4- Alverno College

With a slow start to set one, Mikala Peterson (Mora, Minn./Mora HS) sparked up her team with a massive kill to start the Saints getting on the board. The Saints continued to fight for their points until they got on a four point run defended by their front row with big kills from all three hitters. The team continued to battle back and forth until Myhre tied the set at 15-15 with a service ace from the back line. After back-and-forth points between the two teams, the Saints pulled away, with help from Lustig, to go on a five point run to end the set 25-22. 

The Saints started off set two strong with three consecutive service aces from Myhre. After a small battle between the teams, Peterson managed to put the ball away and allow the team to go on a run that put them up 10-3. The Saints stayed ahead by a large amount of points but really pulled away with a six-point run that involved not only all three hitters but server, Yackley to finish the game 25-11. 

St. Scholastica started off set three with momentum from set two and created a margin over Alverno early on with a 5-1 lead. The Saints middles Swangstue and Baribeau dominated the net with multiple kills helping the Saints stay ahead and create a divide between the teams. Server Seibel allowed the team to go on a six point run later in the set putting the Saints ahead 16-4. The team finished the set 25-10 with a kill from Seibel.
