ST. PAUL, Minn. – The St. Scholastica softball team headed to Saint Paul for a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) doubleheader against St. Catherine University.
Game 1, CSS 6, SCU 7
The Saints started with two singles from
Emma Bolin (Litchfield Park, Ariz./Millennium HS) and
Kari Breuer (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS), followed by two steals on a passed ball, but the next three Saints batters would be put away.
The Wildcats would get on the board early as they recorded a triple and double in the inning, but the Saints would only allow one run. The next at bat for St. Kate's would bring in two more runs to take the 3-0 lead.
Lauren Laviano (Maplewood, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) would get a double in top of the sixth,
Megan Bussey (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) would pinch run for Laviano, then Aisland Dail singled. Bussey would score off an interference, then Dail stole second moments before advancing to third on the interference.
Haley Rosenthal (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) would bring in Dail from a sacrifice fly, they would head into the bottom of the six down 2-3.
In the seventh,
Isabella Jack (St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park HS) would pinch hit and get on a base with a single, again Bolin and Breuer singled, having the bases loaded. After two outs, including one of the runners out at home plate, two errors by the Wildcats allowed the Saints to get two runs, taking a 4-3 advantage.
The Wildcats would tie the game up with a run to bring the game to extra innings. The Saints would capitalize when Dail doubled bringing the placed runner at second to home plate and then
Payton Lang (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) singled and Dail went to third. Dail would steal home and bring in another run before two more Saints got out, having a two-run lead heading into the final at bat for the Wildcats.
St. Kate's would have the ultimate comeback as they scored three runs late to secure the first game of the matchup, taking the 7-6 victory.
Aryn Blumenthal (Linwood, Minn./Forest Lake HS) would record the loss and have 3.0 innings pitched, while Rosenthal would pitch 4.1 innings with two strikeouts.
Game 2, CSS 4, SCU 5
The first three innings saw the game scoreless, again the opponents would get the first point on the board when they led off with a home run in the bottom of the fourth.
The Saints would be able to score two runs Laviano had a single that brought in two Saints'. With one out, Dail would connect with the pitch and knock one out of the park, bringing in another two runs. The Saints would have a 4-1 advantage.
The Wildcats would add another run in the bottom of the sixth, before returning from behind again when they combined for five hits for three runs. St. Kate's would win in a walkoff with the final score being 5-4.
