Duluth, Minn. – The College of Saint Scholastica Softball team hosted the Pipers of Hamline University for a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) doubleheader, today, April 18th. The two teams played on the Saints' dirt field (Kenwood Field) for the first time since 2021. The two teams would split, but it would be the first conference win for the Saints and the first conference win for first time coach Kallee Wilkins.
Game One, CSS 0, HU 5
Game one would have the home team get shutout, but it was a competitive contest as both teams remained scoreless until the top of the fourth. Hamline University would two in the fourth inning and add four more in the rest of the contest to score six runs against the Saints.
The Saints batters would only be able to record three hits, two coming from the bat of Lauren Laviano (Maplewood, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) and another from Grace Hadlich (Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi HS).
Game Two, CSS 5, HU 1
Coming off that tough loss, the Saints realized enough is enough, and put the foot on the gas for game two against the Pipers. The first runs of the game would be scored at the bottom of the third, as St. Scholastica would kick things off with four runs.
Laviano would score the first run as she was brought by a sacrifice fly by Aislind Dail (Sumner, Wash./Sumner HS) after she doubled and advanced to third via a wild pitch. The Saints' Payton Lang (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) would be the next scorer for the Saints after getting walked and then brought in by a fielders choice from Hadlich. Samantha Paniagua (Corona, Calif./Centennial HS) singled through the ride side, allowing Bolin to score and Hadlich to score from the throw.
The Saints would not score again in the fourth, but the Pipers would, registering one run in the inning cutting the Saints lead to three. The final run for the Saints would come in the bottom of the sixth, Haley Rosenthal (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) would get on base, allowing Adie Potratz (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji HS) to pinch run, the freshman would steal second and third. Finally, Laviano would bring in Potratz through a sacrifice fly.
With one inning left, Saints pitcher Ashley Matejka (Oak Forest, Ill./Carl Sandburg HS (Wartburg College)) would hold off the Pipers. Matejka would pick up her second win on the season as she pitched a full game and only allowed four hits and one run, with one strikeout.
What's Next
The Saints (4-22, 1-11 MIAC) will host the Gusties (16-14, 10-2 MIAC) of Gustavus Adolphus College, in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) doubleheader. The games will be played at Kenwood field, on Saturday, April 20th. Game one is scheduled for 1 p.m. game two is scheduled for 3 pm.
