NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Saint Scholastica Softball team stayed overnight in Northfield coming off their doubleheader against St. Olaf. Today they once again played in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) doubleheader, this time against the Carleton Knights.
Game One, CSS 7, CAR 12
Game one was a well-fought match between both teams. Carlton would get things going early by scoring two runs in the bottom of the first period, however that lead they worked to build would not last long as the Saints would go on to score three runs in the top of the second.
The Saints' Jayden Lind would get things going by hitting a single and making it to base safely. She would then go on to steal second, setting the team up for a good move, one they would be able to capitalize on. Following Lind's stolen base, Madi Gilenke would ground out to second, allowing Lind to advance to third.
Danielle Erickson (International Falls, Minn./Littlefork-Big Falls HS) would get up to bat, but she would be walked. The Saints now have runners on first and third. Erickson would make a great play and steal second base, setting the Saints up once again for a great opportunity. Following another out against the Saints, Dail would be hit by a pitch and given first, loading the bases for the Saints. Breuer would hit a triple, exactly what the Saints needed, allowing Emma Bolin (Litchfield Park, Ariz./Millennium HS), Lind, and Erickson to all score, giving the Saints a one-run lead.
Carleton would go on to also score three runs in the bottom of the second, once again giving them their two-run lead.
Carleton would also go on to score five unanswered runs in the fourth with the Saints not scoring again until the top of the sixth.
There, the Saints' Dail would score her first run of the day, bringing the Saints one run closer. Following that, Bolin would score her second run of the game, putting in a great effort for the Saints. Like any Saints game, that would not be all, as Breuer would see a home plate for the Saints recording another run in the sixth.
Game one would come to an end with the Saints giving it their all, but falling short with a final score of 7-12
Game Two, CSS 9, CAR 11
Game two was just as good as game one, with the Saints seeing more and stopping more runs this time around, unfortunately, Carleton was still just too much for the Saints and we would once again fall short.
This time around the Saints would begin the scoring with Bolin once again finding home plate for the Saints ringing in her second run of the day. Carleton would beat the Saints out in the first, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first giving them an early one-run lead.
The Saints would not score in the second, allowing Carleton to build their lead to four. Bolin would lead the way for the Saints yet again, scoring her third run of the day in the third inning, bringing the Saints one step closer to Carleton, unfortunately for CSS, that is all the scoring the Saints would see in the third.
Carleton would once again best St. Scholastica this inning recording four runs, once again extending their lead.
The Saints would bite back in the fourth inning, with Haley Rosenthal (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS), Lauren Laviano (Maplewood, Minn./Mahtomedi HS), and Bolin all scoring to try to get back into the game.
After this inning, the Carleton lead was cut down to three runs. The next scoring would come in the sixth, where the Saints' Aryn Blumenthal (Linwood, Minn./Forest Lake HS) and Dail would both score, once again cutting the Knights lead to one run.
That wouldn't last long however as the Knights would also score two runs this inning, bringing their lead back to three runs. The Saints would once again score two runs in the seventh inning, scored by Lind and Blumenthal, unfortunately for the Saints, that was too little too late as Carleton still had a two-run lead.
Game two would come to an end with a final score of 9-11.
