CLERMONT, Fla. – The St. Scholastica softball team played in their final two games of their spring break trip this early morning into the afternoon. Their first match was against the University of Chicago, where the Saints would battle back in the last two innings, but fall 6-5. In their final game versus Monmouth College, the Saints ended things on a high note as they captured an 8-1 victory.
CSS 5, CHI 6
In the early goings, Chicago was able to score a run in the first inning. They then added two more runs on three hits, with the 3-0.
In the top of the fourth,
Lauren Laviano (Maplewood, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) would be walked with two outs, and
Samantha Paniagua (Corona, Calif./Centennial HS) recorded the first hit for the Saints on a fielder's choice, resulting in an out at second.
The fifth inning brought more trouble for St. Scholastica as they saw another three runs come in for Chicago. With the Saints up to bat, a new pitcher came in, allowing the Saints to get some points on the board.
Emma Bolin (Litchfield Park, Ariz./Millennium HS) started off with a single to right field, after two outs, Paniagua was walked.
Adie Potratz (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji HS) would come in to pinch run for Paniagua and with two runners on
Grace Hadlich (Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) would hit a single to right field, allowing Potratz to score and Bolin to advance to third. Then Potratz would be able to steal home for another run. Heading into the bottom of the sixth, it was 6-2.
Chicago would record two hits, but would come out scoreless. With the Saints getting some momentum in the last inning,
Haley Rosenthal (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) would get things going again with a single to center field.
Jadyn Lind (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) would come in to pinch run and
Aryn Blumenthal (Linwood, Minn./Forest Lake HS) was pinch hit for the Saints. Blumenthal would eventually be walked, allowing for another pinch hitter to the plate,
Payton Lang (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) who hit a double allowing Lind to score.
Bollin then added another single, allowing Blumenthal to score from third, as the score was now 5-6. Chicago would slow things down, when they brought in a new pitcher to the circle. That seemed to work as she retired the last two batters and finished out the inning, helping her team secure the 6-5 win over a Saints' last effort.
CSS 8, MON 1
After a close game in the early morning, the Saints would come out this time with the bats rolling. Bolin led off with a single, than
Aislind Dail (Sumner, Wash./Sumner HS) hit a double (her 100th hit of her career), allowing Laviano to hit a sac fly to bring in Bolin. Rosenthal would reach first base on an error, Dail would score, giving the Saints an early 2-0 heading into the second.
Potratz would record a single and then advanced to second on a wild pitch to open the bottom of the second. Eventually, Potratz would score off a fielding error before the Saints ended the second.
The Fighting Scots would finally get on the board in the top of fourth, but the Saints would take control of the game in the sixth innings as they had five runs on six hits. Potratz and Bolin singled, then Laviano got an RBI off her double. Hadlich would single and Laviano would score on a throwing error. Rosenthal and Lang both had RBI singles to secure the 8-1 win.
Ashley Matejka (Oak Forest, Ill./Carl Sandburg HS (Wartburg College)) would get the start in the circle and did some damage in the game, she got her first win this season and was able to strike out six batters.

The Saints will return back home with an overall record of 3-9 and will play a non conference doubleheader with Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Mar. 30, games are in Stevens Point and will be played at 1 ⁄ 3 p.m.
