KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The St. Scholastica softball team continued their long stretch of games in Florida with an early contest against St. Norbert College. The Saints would be able to pull off an amazing comeback in their first game, winning 5-4. While they were defeated 10-0 by #10 ranked Rowan University.
CSS 5, SNC 4
The first four innings remained scoreless as both teams played well defensively, as the Saints had one hit and St. Norbert had two.
It wasn't until the bottom of the fifth,, where St. Norbert would be able to get on the board with one run. The Saints would bat next and have two hits as
Lauren Laviano (Maplewood, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) led off with a double and
Aryn Blumenthal (Linwood, Minn./Forest Lake HS) singled, but the foes would tag pinch runner
Megan Bussey (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) at the plate as she tried to score from second.
Then the Knights would add three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for a 4-0 lead.
Payton Lang (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) would be hit by a pitch, allowing her to get on base in the seventh. A sacrifice bunt would allow Lang to move to second and she advanced on a wild pitch. The reliable
Emma Bolin (Litchfield Park, Ariz./Millennium HS) singled bringing in Lang. The Knights would walk a Saints batter. Laviano would hit a single to bring in Bolin to now only be down by two runs.
Natalie Roehl (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge HS) would be subbed in for Laviano, she would then steal second base. With two runners on base,
Samantha Paniagua (Corona, Calif./Centennial HS) would blast a pitch for a three-run homer, giving the Saints 5-4 advantage
With the Knights still up to bat, relief pitcher
Haley Rosenthal (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) and the Saints would hang onto the lead and secure their second victory of the season.
CSS 0, ROW 10
Rowan would come out with a bang as they led off with a home run and added another run off three hits to have an early 2-0 advantage. Lang would record a single down the right field line, but she would be left on base after a ground out the next play.
The third inning saw three more runs for Rowan and they followed it up with another two in the fourth, having the seven runs on the board total.
Grace Hadlich (Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) would make something out of her full count as she got on base with a single. Again, the Saints wouldn't be able to get going offensively. Unfortunately, Rowan ended things quickly with another three runs and the Saints wouldn't be able to make another late comeback in this contest.
