CLERMONT, Fla. – The St. Scholastica softball team was able to shift gears on Monday after opening their spring break trip with two shutout losses the day before. The Saints captured their first win on the season over Geneva College, winning 6-1 before battling with Arcadia University in a tight 2-1 defeat.
CSS 6, GEN 1
The bottom of third saw a Saints team gain some momentum when
Adie Potratz (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji HS) was able to get on base from a successful bunt.
Emma Bolin (Litchfield Park, Ariz./Millennium HS) would bat next, the junior would single, allowing for the always dangerous
Aislind Dail (Sumner, Wash./Sumner HS) to the plate.
Dail did just that, she connected with the pitch and recorded a double, allowing Potratz to score. Geneva would make some errors allowing
Lauren Laviano (Maplewood, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) to reach first and Bollin and Dail to cross home plate.
Grace Hadlich (Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) would get on base due to another Geneva error. Hadlich would steal second and Laviano would be able to score for a 4-0 lead.
Geneva would be able to score a run in the top of 5th, but the Saints would answer right back with a run of their own as Bolin would record another single and Dail managed another double. Laviano would earn the sacrifice fly RBI to bring Bolin in for an 5-1 advantage.
Jadyn Lind (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) would be hit by a pitch and then would slowly make her way to home plate after two wild pitches and an
Madi Glienke (West Fargo, N.D./West Fargo Sheyenne HS) RBI groundout to be up 6-1.
Geneva would have an opportunity to score late, but the Saints and
Aryn Blumenthal (Linwood, Minn./Forest Lake HS) would take care of business for their first win of the season. Blumenthal also made her pitching debut today for the Saints and pitched 7.0 innings.
Hear from Coach Wilkins
"Everyone has a first, today was our first team win, although this will remain a memorable one for me especially as it is my first win as a head coach. It will be the first of many more to come. I am proud of this team and their hard work, trusting the process, and the effort they put into each game, no matter the outcome."
CSS 1, AUS 2
The Saints would be up to bat first, Dail would get hit by the pitch and
Samantha Paniagua (Corona, Calif./Centennial HS) singled to left field, but the Knights would earn a strikeout to retire the Saints early.
Bolin added another single to her totals as she led off in the third. Two outs would follow, Bolin would steal second and Paniagua reached on an error, Bolin moved to third. Again, with two runners on base, Arcadia would keep the Saints scoreless.
The foes would use that opportunity to score two runs after some wild pitches and a double, making the scored 2-0 in the Knights' favor. Fast forward to the top of the 5th, Dail and Lind would both be walked, and Hadlich was hit by pitch. The Saints had two outs already, but the bases were loaded. After a few walks earlier, the Knights pitching would be able to earn another strikeout to keep the Saints off the board.
With the score remaining 2-0, the Saints were finally able to bring in a run as Dail singled to left, allowing pinch runner
Natalie Roehl (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge HS) to score. The Knights wouldn't be able to add to their totals in the bottom of the 6th, allowing for the Saints to have more opportunity.
Hadlich would reach on an error and so would Glienke, but again the Saints already had two outs. Roehl was able to get four balls and earn a base. Again, St. Scholastica had the bases loaded with two outs, but Arcadia would strikeout the final batter to hold onto the 2-1 victory.
