CLERMONT, Fla. – The St. Scholastica softball team began action at The Spring Games on Sunday against the University of Southern Maine and North Central College in the sunshine state.
CSS 0, USM 5
This was the first ever time these two teams would face off in sunny Florida. The Husky pitching would be in full force today, striking out 12 batters throughout the contest. The first two innings would go scoreless until the foes connected in the bottom of third, but the defense and pitcher
Haley Rosenthal (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) would keep them contained only allowing one run.
It wasn't until the top of the 5th,
Emma Bolin (Litchfield Park, Ariz./Millennium HS) singled to left field to record the first hit for the Saints. The Huskies would record another hit, but were kept off the board in the bottom of the 5th. The bottom of the 6th is where Southern Maine started to heat up, recording four runs to have a 5-1 lead. The Saints wouldn't be able to make the ultimate comeback in this matchup.
CSS 0, NCC 9
The Cardinals got going offensively with three hits and scored once, while the Saints started with a quick three-and-out. The second inning saw two more runs from the Cardinals, this time Bolin would again get on base for the Saints.
Payton Lang (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) would be walked and then both would advance on a wild pitch and be in a scoring opportunity. With two outs already, the Saints would be called for a strikeout and head into the third inning scoreless.
At the bottom of third,
Aislind Dail (Sumner, Wash./Sumner HS) would single to left center but would be out on the next play as Jaydin Lind reached first base on a fielder's choice.
Lauren Laviano (Maplewood, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) struck for a double and Lind would move to third with another two-out situation. A ground out would follow and the Saints would continue to have opportunities to score while being down three runs.
The top of the 4th saw a dominant inning from North Central as they would score four runs and they would record two more runs in the 6th to secure the 9-0 victory of St. Scholastica.
