MANKATO, Minn. – The St. Scholastica softball team opened its 2024 season on Saturday evening with two seven inning games versus Wisconsin-Stout and Buena Vista. The Saints would see their first two games result in 5-1 losses in the MSU Dome.

Game 1: UWS 5, CSS 1
The Saints would bat first, but would face a quick three and out, before the Blue Devils recorded two hits and had one batter walked with the bases loaded with two outs. Senior pitcher Haley Rosenthal (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) got the start in the circle, and was able to strike out the batter to keep the score at 0-0.

The next few innings would result in strong pitching with both teams striking out batters. Stout would strike first as they opened up the bottom of third with a triple, scoring a total of three runs.

Senior Aisland Dail answered right back with a lead off home run to cut the score 3-1. Emma Bolin (Litchfield Park, Ariz./Millennium HS) would get hit by a pitch to get on base, but the Blue Devils wouldn't allow the Saints to capitalize any more in the fourth.

In the bottom of 5th, the Blue Devils would add another run to now have the 4-1 advantage. The Saints would leave two runners on base in the top of the 6th. Lilli Young (Deerwood, Minn./Crosby-Ironton HS) would make her first collegiate appearance in the circle and the Saints would allow their opponents one more run before getting one more opportunity.

The Saints would get a runner on base, but wouldn't be able to score any more runs as they lost 5-1 to open the season

Game 2: BVU 5, CSS 1
The second game of the evening saw the Beavers of Buena Vista University strike first in the inning with three hits and one run. The Saints again wouldn't be able to get going early in this contest. The Beavers answered with another run of their own in the second, now leading 2-0

In the bottom of the second, Grace Hadlich (Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) got on base with a single, but she would be left on base heading into the third. The Beavers had a quick in-and-out in the top of third and the Saints would start with two strikeouts before, Jadyn Lind (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) singled to left field, and Rosenthal followed up with a single of her own. Another strikeout would keep the Saints off the board.

Ashley Matejka (Oak Forest, Ill./Carl Sandburg HS (Wartburg College)) was in the circle for game two, and in the top of 4th, she would strike out two Beavers. Peyton Lang recorded a double in the bottom of the inning, but the Saints were still kept scoreless.

The Beavers would heat up, scoring three runs in 5th, making the score 5-0. After a few more scoreless innings from both teams, the Saints would have one more chance to put some runs on the board. Lang would start with a walk to get on first, and then a wild pitch would allow her to advance. Dail would fly out, allowing Lang to move to third with one out. Another fly out by Adie Potratz (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji HS) would bring Lang in for Potratz's first RBI.

Now with the score 5-1, the Saints added back-to-back singles from Natalie Roehl (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge HS) and Lind, but the game would come to an end on a strikeout.
