Men’s Basketball Drops First MIAC Matchup of Season Against Carleton

Northfield, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team traveled to Northfield this evening to take on the Knights from Carleton College this evening. The Saints found themselves down 11 at the halftime break, and the Knights were able to continue their success in the second half, taking today's game by a score of 78-50

How it Happened

First Half

The Knights jumped out to a quick 6-0 run before Moe Washington (Silver Spring, Md./Hibbing Community College) would get the Saints on the board with a layup at the 16:24 mark.

CSS got themselves closer to the Knights with a dunk from Aaron Keykal (Princeton, Minn./Princeton HS) and a three-pointer by Kobe Karels (Cambridge, Minn./Isanti (Aurora University)) to make the score 8-7 in favor of Carleton.

Washington would score his second field goal of the half with a three-pointer to tie the game at 10-10.

Tanner Thomson (Woodbury, Minn./Stillwater HS) recorded his first points on a three-pointer, but the Knights were able to reclaim the lead at 17-13.

Thomson scored the next five points for the Saints, notching a three-pointer and a layup, but Carleton still led by a slim margin with 6:52 to play in the half.

Thomson recorded two more three-pointers for CSS, followed by a jumper from Koy Nelson (Port Wing, Wis./South Shore HS) made the score 32-27 with the Knights still on top.

Thomson would score the final field goal for the Saints in the half on a step-back jumper, but the Saints trailed by a score of 40-29 at the halftime break. 

Second Half

Carleton opened the second half with a 13-0 run to expand their lead to 53-29 before Nelson would nail a three-pointer to begin the scoring for the Saints to begin the second half.

Ben Raymond (Hudson, Wis./Concordia Academy) scored his first points at the 13:09 mark in the half on a three-pointer, but the Knights still held a commanding lead over the Saints, leading 59-35.

Keykal scored on his second dunk of the evening at the 9:49 mark in the half, followed by a successful trip to the line from Washington, to make the score 66-39.

Bryce Shoto (Owego, Il./Oswego East Highschool) got his first field goal to fall moments later, and he followed up his layup with a three-pointer to bring him to six points for his total for the night, but Carleton still held a substantial lead over CSS.

Keykal would score on a layup attempt in the closing minutes and the Saints would get their last field goal of the game from a jumper by Drey Wisdom (Oswego, Il./Oswego East Highschool) to close out tonight's contest with Carleton taking the game by a score of 78-50. 

Top Performers

  • Tanner Thomson (Woodbury, Minn./Stillwater HS) led CSS in scoring tonight, notching 18 points to go along with two assists and two rebounds.
  • Moe Washington (Silver Spring, Md./Hibbing Community College) displayed his all-around play tonight, recording seven points while adding five rebounds and two blocks.
  • Aaron Keykal (Princeton, Minn./Princeton HS) finished the contest tonight with six points while also adding six rebounds. 

Up Next

The Saints (2-5, 0-1) will be back in action on Saturday, December 7, where they will host the Cardinals from Saint Mary's University at the Reif Gymnasium. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
