Saints Fight Hard in Loss Against UW Eau Claire

Duluth, Minn. – The Saint Scholastica Women's hockey team hosted a non-conference matchup against the University of Wisconsin Blugolds, tonight, December 13, which ended in a riveting 1-2 loss.

The lone scorer for the Saints this evening was Victoria Nelson (Mahtomedi, MN/Mahtomedi HS).

How it Happened

First Period

The first 20 minutes of play started at an even, however the Blugolds rang off three shots on net, which were all stopped by Cole.

Cole was able to stop the first three shots on net, but the fourth managed to slip by her glove, at 4:58, giving the Blugolds their first goal of the game.

Following this opening goal, the Saints were quick to attempt to counter, getting off a number of shots in an attempt to once again even the score.

The Saints were unable to do so, as the Blugolds with just over two minutes remaining in the period once again found the back of the net, recording their second and final goal of the game.

Period one came to an end shortly after with the score after the first 20 remaining 0-2.

Second Period

Period two opened up with a flurry of saves from Saints goaltender Cole, who recorded five as the period opened.

The Blugolds quickly found themselves on powerplay, however the Saints penalty kill was quick and able to easily put that down.

Cole, once again came up big for the Saints, recording another four saves in a row following the Blugold powerplay.

The Saints then had the puck in the Blugold territory and began an attack of their own, attempting seven shots, however none of which were on target.

Not long after, the Saints' Nelson found a good look right in front of the net and was able to send one home for the Saints, decreasing the deficit to just one goal before the second period ended.

The second period ended a little under five minutes following Nelson's goal, with the score after two being, 1-2.

Third Period

The Saints found themselves on a power play to open up the third period, following a delay-of-game call, called against Eau Claire.

Much to the dismay of the Saints, their powerplay was unsuccessful, however the Saints managed to get four shots off after the power play, with one of them falling on target.

The remainder of the third period was slightly one sided, with the Blugolds dominating the puck in the Saints zone and the neutral zone, however the Saints defense did not crack and no other goals were allowed in the game.

The third period ended with the Blugolds taking the 1-2 victory over the Saints.
