Northfield, MN.- The St. Scholastica women's soccer team traveled south to take on the Knights of Carleton College this afternoon at 1 p.m. in a MIAC conference matchup.
Today's match ended in a 0-6 loss for the Saints. It was a well-fought battle on both sides of the field during the 90 minutes of play. Despite the best efforts, the Knights found the back of the net six times to take the win.
How it Happened
1st Half
It was a true test of resilience this afternoon as the Saints had to play defensive off the bat as Carleton struck first in the beginning minutes with a goal at 1:38 off of a corner kick. Shots came from all corners of the field as Carelton played very offensively from the start of the first half making the Saints play with their heads on a swivel from the opening moments.
Minutes later a shot rang out from Kaitlyn Sautter (Princeton, Minn./Princeton HS), with the shot traveling lower right but with no success in tying it up.
Gracie Meagher (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet HS) stood tall in the net as the Knights fired multiple shots at her trying to extend their lead. With this high-tempo play, the Knights were relentless with multiple scoring chances but were stopped defensively by the Saints and Meagher.
Carelton extended the lead to 0-2, 18 minutes in with a shot far out of the box, hitting the top left corner of the net.
After the goal, a penalty kick resulted from a trip while on a breakaway shot, making the Knights take the lead further, 0-3.
Offensively, the Saints struggled to break through the knights' structured defense, with a few promising rushes but were shut down right away due to the sustained pressure but the ball was ultimately transitioned back to the Saints' defensive zone.
2nd Half
The Knights came in hot pounding five shots right away in the Saints' defensive zone. Not long after that, the Knights beat the goalkeeper once more, bringing their lead up to four at the 57th-minute mark.
Only two and a half minutes later, they would once again beat the defense and score again at exactly 60 minutes in.
The Knights dominated the rest of the game on the Saints' end, letting go of four more shots before ultimately hitting the sixth goal of the game, sealing themselves the win.
