Women's Hockey Fall to No. 1 River Falls 6-1 on the Road

RIVER FALLS, Wis, – The St. Scholastica Women's Hockey Team traveled to River Falls Wisconsin on Tuesday, Jan. 9th to play the #1 ranked Falcons of the University of Wisconsin River Falls on the road. The game did not go in the Saints' favor as the game would end in a 6-1 Falcons win.

What Happened
The first period would see strong offense and well-played defense from both teams. The Saints' offense would record four shots, against the Falcons who registered 13. While the Saints' defense played very well in the first period against a very strong opponent, they let in two goals to close the first. The Saints would not end up scoring in the first. The period would end with a final score of 2-0. 

The second period would open up strong for both teams on the defensive side. No goals would be scored until the 7:23 mark. The opening goal of the period would come from the Saints' Lauryn Hull (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly HS), coming from Lyndi Schubert (Mantorville, Minn./Kasson-Mantorville HS). Unfortunately, the Falcons were quick to respond, scoring their third goal only 30 seconds later, once again extending their lead to two. The Saints would push hard the rest of the half to try and close the gap, however, the Falcons would once again score to extend their lead to three goals (4-1).

The Saints would make a goalie substitution with seven-and-a-half minutes remaining in the period, Cole would remain in the net for the remainder of the period but would not play in the third. The period would end with the Saints putting up four shots bringing their total to eight, against the Falcons who would put up 24 shots in the period bringing their game total to 37. 

The third and final period of play would be the last stand for the Saints as they would give it their all in the final 20 minutes. It was an aggressive period for both teams on the ice, we would see multiple penalties handed out as the Saints desperately tried to cling on to any hope of winning. It wouldn't be long for the Falcons to score their first goal of the period. They would score a power-play goal only six-and-a-half minutes into the final period extending their lead to four goals.

After that goal the Saints tried to throw everything they had at the Falcons, however they were able to once again extend their lead to five goals with less than a minute remaining. The period would come to a close with the Falcons getting 14 shots in the period bringing their total shots to 51 compared to the Saints who would only get three off, the Saints would get 11 shots on net in all three periods. The final score of tonight's matchup was 6-1 at the final buzzer. 

Goaltending 
Kieley Curow (Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS) would play most of the game for the Saints besides the end of the second period, she would face 43 shots and made 37 saves

Makenzie Cole (Cohasset, Minn./Grand Rapids HS) would play the final seven-and-a-half minutes of the second period, face eight shots, and not let in any goals.

Jordan O'Connor would play all three periods for the Falcons, she would face 11 total shots and let in one goal.

What's Next
The Saints (3-9-1, 2-3-1 MIAC) Will play the Concordia College Cobbers (4-8-1, 0-5-1 MIAC) at Mars Lakeview Arena, in Duluth Minn. on Jan. 12th puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
