DULUTH, Minn. – The Saint Scholastica Women's Hockey team hosted the Cobbers of Concordia Colleg tonight at Mars Lakeview arena. The Game was neck-and-neck throughout all 60 minutes of play, but the Saints prevailed just 22 seconds into overtime to take the win.
What Happened.
The first period started with action coming from all players on the ice. While the physicality of the period was certainly tough, the scoring was limited, with only one goal being scored late in the period to put the Cobbers up 1-0. Both teams were very close with the number of shots they had in the period as well, with the Cobbers putting up five, compared to the Saints, who shot for just one less. The period would come to a close, with only one penalty being called and one goal on the board.
Things would begin to pick up in the second period as both teams more than doubled their shots and more goals were registered. The Cobbers would register 11 shots this period and would be the first to score, just five-and-a-half minutes into the second period giving them a comfortable but risky two goal lead. The Saints, in an effort to close the gap, would register nine shots in the period, and were luckily able to score on one of them with the Saints' Abby Pohlkamp (Baxter, Minn./Brainerd HS), getting her first of three goals from an assist by Emily Sabol (New Prague, Minn./New Prague HS). The period would come to a close with the Saints now once again only one goal behind the Cobbers.
The third period saw the Saints really kick it into gear as it was now or never for them if they wanted to win this game. Less than a minute into the period Pohlkamp would register her second goal of the night to tie the game up 2-2, assisted by Allie Bussey (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS). However that would not be all for the Saints as they desperately needed this conference win. Hanley Block (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria HS) would register the Saints' third goal of the night, giving them their first lead of the night, Block's goal would be assisted by Sarah Parent. Unfortunately the Cobbers were quick to respond with a power play goal of their own, once again tying the game, at 3-3. The period would end with the Saints putting up a total of eight shots on net compared to the Cobbers who would have 13. With the game being tied at the end of the third there was a brief five-minute overtime after regulation.
The five-minute overtime period was fast, not long after the faceoff, the Saints would ring the puck around their own net and quickly skate down ice, and with only 22 seconds into overtime, Pohlkamp would register her third goal of the night, giving the Saints the win and completing the hat-trick. Her game winning goal would be assisted by Lisa LaRoche (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka HS), and Bussey. The game would come to an end with a final score of 4-3.
