Duluth Minn. – The Saint Scholastica Women's Hockey Team faced up against the Pipers of Hamline University at home tonight. The Saints played some of the best hockey they have all season against the Pipers, however, they would still end up falling short 3-2 at the end of 60 minutes.

What Happened
The first period was certainly a back-and-forth effort for both teams. Both the Pipers and Saints played excellent hockey however their defenses outshined both of their offenses. That was clearly shown in the rapid turnovers throughout the period, as well as the score at the end of the first period, 0-0. The Pipers would outshoot the Saints in the first, 13-4. But in true Saint Scholastica fashion, we were able to hold them off this period.

The action would certainly pick up in the second period with both teams scoring their first goals of the game and putting on a show for everyone watching. The first goal would come from Abby Pohlkamp (Baxter, Minn./Brainerd HS) four and a half minutes into the period. Lizzie Northquest (Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park HS) and Lisa LaRoche (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka HS) would assist her goal.

The Pipers would get their turn to hit back, and they capitalized on that chance, scoring two back-to-back goals just two minutes apart from each other. With the Saints down, they felt some sense of urgency to tie the game up once again, and with exactly two minutes remaining in the period, Lauryn Hull (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly HS) successfully scored the Saints' second goal of the game coming off her rebound. Allie Bussey (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) would register an assist on this goal. With only two minutes remaining in the period, the period would end with the Pipers getting 12 shots on the net compared to the Saints who would shoot more efficiently getting only five shots on the net.

The third and final period was certainly interesting, to say the least. The Saints knew they had to get something done if they wanted to not only extend their winning streak to five games, and end the Pipers seven-game win streak. They put the pedal to the metal this period, tying the Pipers for shots on net with nine a piece. However just eight seconds into the period the Pipers would bury their third goal of the game, giving them an early lead in the period. The Saints, recognizing they were in a sticky situation, turned on the burners to get back into the game.

Late in the third period, Bussey registered a shot on net for the Saints, and puck nearly crossed the line to score for the Saints, however, it was deemed a save for the Pipers. With an empty Saints net, and a minute remaining in the third, the Saints would move the puck around trying to get a good look, but the Pipers were able to dump the puck to the Saints zone, running out the clock and ending the game 3-2.

Goaltending
Makenzie Cole (Cohasset, Minn./Grand Rapids HS) would play 58 minutes for the Saints, she would face 34 shots, and register 31 saves.

Olivia Rinzel would play just under 60 minutes for the Pipers, she would face 18 shots and register 16 saves.
