ST. PAUL, Minn. – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team traveled to St. Paul this evening to take on the Wildcats from St. Catherine's University this evening. The Saints found themselves trailing by seven at the halftime break, and despite the Saints strong second half showing, the Wildcats came away with a 45-40 victory.
How it Happened
The first two CSS field goals of the night both came from behind-the-arc, with Jackie Johnson (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji HS) and Lexi Imdieke (Andover, Minn./Andover HS) each contributing a three-pointer to give CSS an early 6-1 lead.
The Wildcats would go on a run to end the first quarter, with the Saints getting three more points from Gabby Voigt (St. Michael. Minn./St. Michael- Albertville HS) at the free throw line, as St. Catherine's took a 17-9 lead after the opening quarter.
St. Scholastica got off to a quick start in the second quarter, with Imdieke and Hope Carlson (Proctor, Minn./Proctor HS) both stretching their range from the three-point line, as the Wildcats lead was trimmed to six points.
To close out the first half, Voigt was able to get a jumper to fall and Katie Vaske (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS (Hamline University)) would score her first points on a three-pointer with just 15 seconds to play in the half, as the Wildcats took a 27-20 lead over CSS into halftime.
Imdieke opened up the second half for CSS scoring the first five points, including another three-pointer, as the Saints trailed by just two points.
After the Wildcats brought its lead back up to eight points, the Saints got help with a pair of free throws from Vaske and a layup by Kloey Lind (Pine City, Minn./Pine City HS), to close the gap, trailing 33-30.
Jumping to the fourth quarter, the Saints first field goal came from Hannah Compton (Anoka, Minn./Crosby-Ironton HS), as the freshman hit a key three-pointer to make the score 38-34 in favor of St. Catherine's.
Although Lind would score the next four points for CSS off layups, the Wildcats went on a 5-0 run over the late minutes of the game, and despite a layup from Imdieke, St. Catherine's came away with a 45-40 victory over CSS tonight.
