ST. PAUL, Minn. – The St. Scholastica football team got itself back to .500 today, after a victory over one of its conference rivals, the Scots from Macalester. St. Scholastica took a 13-3 lead into the half, and were able to hold off a late comeback attempt, for its second win of the season.
How it Happened
After the Saints went three-and-out, the Scots drew first blood in this one, tallying a field goal on its first drive of the game, taking an early 3-0 lead that would head into the second quarter.
In the second quarter, the Saints broke out on its first play of a drive, when Donald West (St. Paul, Minn./Woodbury HS (Iowa Central)) found Ricky Weber (Roseville, Minn./Roseville HS) for a 79-yard reception. A few plays later, Nick Schlender (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) found the endzone to give the Saints a 6-3 lead.
The Saints defense made a big play on the ensuing Scots drive, when on third and five, Simon Randorf (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) recorded an interception, which capped off a Saints defensive stand that included a tackle for loss by Adrian Martin (New Orleans, La./John Curtis Christian HS).
CSS couldn't take advantage of the great field position its defense gave to them, but on the Saints' next drive, Wyatt Lahr (Bowlus, Minn./Royalton HS) completed his first career passing touchdown to Weber, as the Saints now led 13-3.
The Scots opened the second half with the ball and the Saints caught a huge break, when John Lassila (Elk River, Minn./Elk River HS) returned an interception for a touchdown, extending CSS' lead to 20-3.
Later in the quarter, the Scots found the endzone for the first time of the afternoon, scoring on a blocked punt, as CSS saw its deficit sit at 20-10.
The Saints held its lead going into the fourth quarter and after a 35-yard gain on the ground from Ashton Hain (St. Francis, Minn./St. Francis HS), CSS added three more points to its total on a Jacob Andrews (Owatonna, Minn./Medford HS) 25-yard field goal.
Halfway through the fourth quarter, the Scots capped off a ten-play, 61-yard drive with a touchdown, but CSS still held the advantage with a 23-17 lead.
The Scots had a chance to either tie the game or take the lead on its final drive of the game, but the Saints defense stepped up in a big way, highlighted by a sack by Henry Eilefson (New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) and Randorf, that would force a turnover on downs on the next play.
The Saints then went into victory formation, earning its first conference victory of the season, and second win overall with a 23-17 victory.
