Men's Tennis Blanked by #17 Gusties

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica college men's tennis team was dispatched 0-9 by No. 17 ranked Gustavus Adolphus College on Saturday afternoon at the Duluth Indoor Sports Center. The Saints gave the Gusties a handful of tightly contested games across the lineup but came away from the weekend stint still searching for their first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) win of 2022-23.

Doubles
To start the match, nationally ranked Gustavus Adolphus took all 3 of the available doubles points heading into singles play, dropping zero games at 1 and 3 doubles.

Julius Tabrizi (Frankfurt, Germany/Bischof-Neumann) and Jack Onkka (Thief River Falls, Minn.) fought hard at the No. 2 spot but ultimately dropped their contest 3-8.

Singles
The Gusties would take the 3-0 doubles lead and never look back, winning 6 of 6 singles matches, all in straight-set fashion.

On No. 1 court Jonas Abeleda (Sydney, Australia/St Aloysius' College) pushed his opponent to the brink of conceding a super breaker in the second set but was held off at the end 0-6, 4-6 by Gustavus's top singles player.

The Saints were able to take 15 games across the 6 singles courts but came away empty-handed in both segments of the match.

Up Next
Next weekend the Saints 1-4 (0-3 MIAC) will head southwest to play another pair of conference opponents with playoff implications on the line. The Saints first stop is against Saint Johns 0-0 (0-0 MIAC) on Saturday in St. Cloud. Doubles action is set to get underway at the STA fitness center starting at 1 p.m.
