What Happened
The game started with some excitement early on. Both teams came out of the gates right away with great offensive and defensive plays, with some good physical hockey mixed in. Both teams would get seven shots on the net in the first period, and fortunately, Lisa LaRoche (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka HS) would be able to convert on one of the Saints' seven shots, giving the Saints a one-goal lead before the period ended. This goal would be assisted by Allie Bussey (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) and Sophie Parendo (Proctor, Minn./Proctor HS). The period would end with the Saints up, 1-0.
The second period would start with a penalty on the Saints, which unfortunately would give the Yellowjackets a power play. Unfortunately, the Yellowjackets would be able to score on this power play, tying the game, 1-1. Only three minutes later, Abby Pohlkamp (Baxter, Minn./Brainerd HS) would score her second power-play goal on the season for the Saints, giving them a one-goal lead once again. LaRoche and Bussey would get the assists on this goal.
That would not be all for the Saints in the Second, Bussey would register her first goal of the game with four minutes left in the period, extending their lead to two. She would be assisted by Taylor Leonard (Mound, Minn./Mound Westonka HS), and Sara Parent (Otsego, Minn./Rogers HS). The second period would come to an end with the Saints in a comfortable lead of 3-1.
The third period was an action packed period on both sides of the ice. The period would start with a Yellowjacket goal 50 seconds into the third period, bringing the Yellowjackets to within one. Not long after the Yellowjackets would score once again, tying the game with 15 minutes left in the period. T
his game went from a comfortable Saints lead to a toss-up in five minutes. Fortunately, Gabby Gamst (Moose Lake, Minn./Moose Lake HS) would be able to secure the final lead for the Saints pushing them to victory with a goal, assisted by Pohlkamp, and Jessie Ketola (Silver Bay, Minn./William Kelly HS). While that was enough to give the Saints the win, the Yellowjackets would pull their goalie with 50 seconds remaining in the third, and with 44 seconds remaining, Bussey would score her second goal of the game, an empty netter, assisted by LaRoche, and Lizzie Northquest (Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park HS).
