Saint Paul Minn. – The Saint Scholastica Women's Hockey Team traveled to Saint Paul to play the Wildcats of St. Kate's in the first of a two-game series. The Saints managed to pull out a 4-3 win on the road.
What Happened
The game started quickly as the first goal of the game came from Saint Kates offense 15 seconds into the game. After that very quick opening goal, we would not see any more goals from either side for the remainder of the period. The Saints would out-shoot the Wildcats with eight shots on goal compared to the Wildcats six shots on net. The Saints would get one power-play during the first period and unfortunately were unable to convert on the one-skater advantage.
The second period was a great one for the Saints. While the Wildcats would out-shoot the Saints, putting up 16 shots on net, while the Saints would only get eight shots on net. However that was all that was needed for the Saints to steal the lead from the Wildcats. The Saints offense would go on to score two goals in the second, the first goal coming from Lyndi Schubert (Mantorville, Minn./Kasson-Mantorville HS), tying the game at 1-1, coming from Abby Pohlkamp (Baxter, Minn./Brainerd HS) and LaRoche. Hanley Block (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria HS) would score her first goal in the season, not long after the game-tying goal from Schubert, taking the 2-1 lead late in the second. Block's goal was assisted by Lauryn Hall. The period would end with the Saints in the lead, 2-1.Â
The third, final period was filled with excitement on both sides of the ice. LaRoche would score her first goal of the game, 32 seconds into the period. This goal was assisted by Block, and Hull, and this would give the Saints a comfortable two-goal lead with plenty of time remaining. Only a minute later, LaRoche would go on to score her second and final goal. This goal was unassisted and extended the Saints' lead to three goals. Unfortunately the scoring did not end there as the Wildcats would go on to score two more goals very close to each other, the third with 7:16 left to play in the game, making it once again a one goal game. The Wildcats were booked twice, giving the Saints two power-plays after the Wildcats' final two goals. Unfortunately, the Saints were not able to score on either of those power-plays. The game would come to an end with a final score of 4-3, and a Saints win.
