Women's Hockey Drop Home Opener

Notables

- Laroche recorded 4 blocked shots
- Arvidson records 37 saves

DULUTH, Minn. - The St. Scholastica women's hockey team opened their season playing some strong competition and their home opener tonight was one of those tough matchups against the defending National Champions from Gustavus at Mars Lakeview Arena.

What Happened
While it was a well-fought effort through all three periods, the Gusties shut the Saints out 6-0 extending their losing streak to three games. The first period saw little action from either side. The Saints would register 13 shots, as opposed to Gustavus, who got 31 off and scored one goal by Gustavus. Both teams would suffer penalties, but wouldn't be able to capitalize on the power plays.

The Second period was also fairly tame, this time around the Saints would only register eight shots, as opposed to the Gusties who shot for 22, only scoring on one. The Gusties' goal came in fairly early at the 6:36 mark, making their lead 2-0 early in the 2nd. Two penalties were also handed out this period.

The Third period would see much more action than the first two. We would see Gustavus tighten up their defense only letting the Saints get six shots off while their offense continued to stay strong and put up 25 shots, scoring on four of them and bringing the final score to 6-0. This period would see three penalties handed out, two to the Gusties anad those penalties happened in quick succession to each other giving the Saints a five-on-three advantage, one they were not able to score on.

Goaltending
Ashlea Arvidson (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS) played all three periods, registering 37 saves for the Saints.

Katie McCoy played all three periods for the Gusties registering 17 saves and a shutout for Gustavus.
