ST. PAUL, Minn. – The St. Scholastica football team traveled to take on Macalester this afternoon, in its final game of the season. The Scots jumped out to a 26-0 lead over CSS into halftime, and although the Saints outscored the Scots 20-14 in the second half, it was not quite enough, as Macalester defeated CSS 40-20 in the season finale.
How it Happened
After both teams traded possession early on, Macalester broke the tie on a defensive touchdown mid-way through the first quarter, to take a 7-0 lead over the Saints.
CSS responded early on the next drive, as Donald West (St. Paul, Minn./Woodbury HS (Iowa Central)) connected with Wyatt Lahr (Bowlus, Minn./Royalton HS) with a pair of receptions, totaling 16 yards. Unfortunately for the Saints, the early momentum fell short, as the Saints were forced to punt.
On Macalester's ensuing drive, its 7-0 lead expanded to 14-0 over CSS, after a six-play, 60-yard drive.
Macalester's special teams continued the momentum, blocking a Saints field goal attempt, to keep the score at 14-0.
Later in the quarter, the Scots went on a very long drive, finding the endzone on a 13-play, 68-yard drive that ended in a touchdown, as Macalester now led 20-0 over the Saints.
On its last drive of the first half, the Scots found the endzone in the closing seconds to extend its lead to 26-0 over CSS going into halftime.
The Saints defense came to play on the first drive of the second half, as Colby Jorschumb (Bloomington, Minn./Bloomington Jefferson HS) was able to notch his first interception of the season to stop the Scots dead in its tracks.
Unfortunately, the Saints could not capitalize on the interception and were forced to punt. The Scots responded with a long 13-play, 70-yard touchdown drive that made the score 33-0.
The Saints offense broke through late in the third quarter, when Nick Schlender (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) found the endzone on the first play of the drive, going 79 yards for a touchdown, as the score now sat at 33-7 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Scots began its next drive in the closing seconds of the third quarter, and Macalester finished the drive off strongly, scoring a touchdown to see its lead expand to 40-7.
Midway through the final quarter, West was able to connect with Lahr for a 25-yard gain, and later found Benjamin Hunter (Superior, Wis./Superior HS) for a gain of 11. Two plays later, West found Lahr in the endzone for a 10-yard touchdown, cutting into the deficit, trailing 40-14.
The Saints defense forced a three-and-out, which would be followed with a West pass to Dayne Evanson (South Range, Wis./Northwestern HS) on the next drive for a 55-yard touchdown, making the score 40-20 in favor of Macalester.
Although the Saints cut into the deficit, it was too little, too late, as the Scots held on for a 40-20 victory over CSS.
End of Season
The Saints finished this season with a record of 2-8, with a 1-6 record in conference play. CSS will say goodbye to seniors Wyatt Lahr (Bowlus, Minn./Royalton HS), Jeriah Yingst (St. Paul, Minn./Humboldt HS), Jake Kukowski (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin HS), and Dayne Evanson (South Range, Wis./Northwestern HS).
