Men’s Basketball Drops Season Opener Against UW-Superior

SUPERIOR, WIS. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's basketball opened up its season this evening as they traveled to Superior to take on the Yellowjackets from UW-Superior. CSS trailed by 13 heading into the second half and were able to cut the lead down to just four points. However, the Yellowjackets were able to pull away in the late minutes and defeat the Saints by a score of 73-57.
 
How it Happened
In the early minutes of the first half, Nick Carlson (Canyon, Minn./South Ridge HS) scored the first points of the season, hitting a three-pointer on an assist from Cade Goggleye (Nett Lake, Minn./North Woods HS) to take an early lead.
 
Noah Winesett (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) and Luke Raymond (Hudson, Wis./Concordia Academy (UW-River Falls)) followed as the two scored a pair of baskets, Winesett with a layup and Raymond with a dunk to give CSS an 8-2 lead.
 
Superior took back the lead after Kevin Thomas (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) hit a three-pointer, as the Yellowjackets gave itself a five-point lead.
 
Midway through the first half, CSS regained its lead, as Ethan Russell (Minneapolis, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) and Yohanes Addiss Gebeyehu (Shoreview, Minn./Roseville HS) each hit a three-pointer to make it 18-15 in favor of CSS.
 
Russell scored his second three-pointer in the half with six and a half minutes to play to give CSS a 23-18 lead. However, Superior ended the first half on a 15-0 run to take a 13-point lead into halftime.
 
Leading off the second half, Thomas notched his second three-pointer of the game, followed by a Winesett layup cut Superior's lead to 12.
 
The Yellowjackets lead was cut to single digits, as Thomas notched another three-pointer and Winesett followed it up with a jumper of his own to cut the lead down to seven.
 
Carlson acted on the following Saints possessions, as he recorded a dunk and converted an and-one, to cut the deficit to just four.
Superior then went on a run to regain its momentum, embarking on an 11-2 run in the next three minutes to bring its lead back up to 13.
 
Russell and Winesett each recorded a three-pointer to held bring back the Yellowjackets lead to nine, but Superior was able to pull away in today's matchup by a score of 73-57.
 
Top Performers
For the Saints, Noah Winesett (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) led in scoring this evening, recording 17 points while shooting six of nine from the field.
 
Kevin Thomas (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) recorded a double-double in tonight's action, recording 13 points and 10 rebounds while also logging five steals in his first career start.
 
Ethan Russell (Minneapolis, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) also added nine points this evening, scoring all his points from beyond the arc while shooting 75 percent from the three-point line.

The Saints (0-1) will be back in action next on Wednesday, November 16th, where they will host Eagles from Northwestern (Minn.) Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Reif Gymnasium.
