DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team returned to the court and to the Reif Gymnasium on Wednesday where it battled second place Hamline University and was on the losing end of a 68-59 final in a tightly-contested matchup throughout.
How It Happened
After the Pipers (8-2, 6-1 MIAC) recorded the first field goal of the game, the Saints scored six straight points with
Miranda Broberg (Milaca, Minn./Milaca HS (UW-Superior)) contributing four of those points. Hamline responded with an 8-0 run to regain the lead, but
Karli Nixon (Deerwood, Minn./Crosby-Ironton HS) and
Megan Hurley (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS) combined to score the final 11 points of the quarter for the Saints, including Nixon's put back as time expired to give CSS a 17-16 lead heading into the second quarter.
The Pipers built a six-point lead in the second quarter until back-to-back 3-pointers by Broberg and Nixon tied the game at 26-26. Both teams combined to make just one field goal in the final four minutes of the second quarter with the final three points going to Hamline as the Pipers had a 31-28 halftime advantage.
Emma Schmidt (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria HS) tied the game with a 3-pointer early in the second half. The game was tied three times in the third quarter, but the Pipers were able to hold a small lead for much of the period. After an
Elizabeth Jankila (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) free throw in the final 10 seconds, the Pipers went the length of the floor and made a layup at the buzzer to lead 50-47 after three quarters.
CSS would struggle to find the basket in the fourth quarter as it didn't make its first field goal until three minutes remaining. The Saints went nearly 10 minutes between made field goals and were outscored 19-6 during that stretch. The Pipers opened up a double-digit lead and would go on to win 68-59.
Top Performers
Broberg led the Saints with 17 points, followed by Nixon with 14 points.
