DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – Gustavus Adolphus College scored 29 points in the third quarter after being held to 31 points in the first half as it defeated the St. Scholastica women's basketball team 77-53 on Saturday in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) action at the Reif Gymnasium.
 
How It Happened
The Gusties (10-2, 8-1 MIAC) jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the opening three minutes of the game. The Saints responded scoring the next six points to tie the game at 9-9. Eve Turner (Side Lake, Minn./Hibbing HS) had four points during that span. However, Gustavus scored the final six points of the quarter to lead 15-9.
 
St. Scholastica scored the first five points of the second quarter with a 3-pointer by Emma Schmidt (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria HS), followed by a Liz Frase (Proctor, Minn./Proctor HS (Concordia-Moorhead)) layup. However, the Gusties went on a 12-3 run to widen their lead to 27-17. Gustavus led 31-22 at the half.
 
Gustavus then started the second half scoring 12 of the first 14 points to lead 43-24. CSS went without a field goal for three minutes later in the quarter and Gusties led 57-31 for their biggest lead of the game. Gustavus shot 61% from the floor in the third quarter.
 
Frase and Megan Hurley (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS) combined for 10 points early in the fourth quarter to try and get the Saints back in it, but the Gusties went on to win 77-53.
 
Top Performers
Frase led the Saints with 12 points. Elizabeth Jankila (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) had a season-high 10 points and also grabbed a season-high nine rebounds. Grace Balut (Sandstone, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS) added a season-high four assists.
 
Rachel Kawiecki led all scorers with 14 points for Gustavus.
